Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. N. D., circa 1820s, 12mo, 300pp, plus index. Previous owner's name at front pastedown, light toning throughout, contemporary leather quite worn, hinges cracking, a reading copy. This volume covers the period June 18, 1714 - December 20, 1714. The SPECTATOR was a famous series of essays, edited by the members of the fictional Spectator Club. It provided a picture of the social life of the times, while expressing the individual concerns of some of the fictional club members.

First 25 pages with insect damage at outside margins.Frontispiece in b/w and and small portrait at title page. Brown leather boards lettered in gilt at spine, edges rubbed, corners bumped, top corners worn to boards, lower front corner chipped. Joints cracked, but holding, hinges good, textblock is intact and firm. Contains articles No. 556, Friday, June 18, 1714 through No. 635, Monday, December 20, 1714.

No editor is identified, although possibly the editors are Addison and Steele. Binding is sound. Pages are tanned, with heavy reading wear, some dampstaining, wear to corners and edges. Boards are missing entirely, although the worn leather spine is attached securely. Daily English publication. Boards are partly detached from spine and there is wear to head/foot of spine. Corners rubbed to boards with scuffing and wear to calf. FFE has small portion at top cut out, otherwise clean end papers and b/w frontis. Contents, including index are clean.

A good copy in contemporary sprinkled calf, backstrip tooled in gilt, joints split but holding, citron lettering piece carrying the volume number but lacking the title-piece; Signature of Abernethy on the front pastedown endleaf. Contents include: Bacon flitch at Whichenovre in Staffordshire, who entitled to it, Clergymen, the vanity of some in wearing scarves, and Flattery, how grateful.

Boards heavily worn, rubbed all round edges, scuffed and marked, cracked along spine joints, gilding rubbed away. Text block edges darkened. Hinges cracked and endpapers creased. Top corner of front free endpaper trimmed away, pencil doodle. Top corner of frontispiece also trimmed away. A little spotting and rusting on first and last few pages. One signature partially detached. A collection issues of the daily The Spectator from 14 June 1714 to its last issue on 20 December 1714.

Spine has been replaced with black cloth with gilt lettering Wear to page edges and boards. Front and back inner hinges have been taped. Marbled endpapers and page edges. Pages are lightly tanned but otherwise in remarkably good condition. Sold singly or with companion volumes 2, 3, 5 and 7 in similar condition; 16mo - over 5¾ - 6¾" tall Good.
