Hardback. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First Edition. Linklater, Eric. A Spell for Old Bones. London: Jonathan Cape, [1949]. First edition. Octavo, pp. [1-4] [1-4] 5-223 [224: blank]. Original tan cloth, front and spine panels lettered in red, bottom edge ot text block rough-trimmed. Fine copy in a very good dust jacket with a light stain on rear panel, faint darkening to spine, negligible edge-wear, a nice copy overall. #3757. $25. Novel set in pre-Roman Scotland in the days when giants were still sometimes born (to regular-size mothers) -- and born to cause trouble, especially, as in this case, when two giants lived at the same time. The mundane and marvellous rub shoulders easily here, and the stupendous events are narrated in a nonchalant way characteristic of the author. "Ultimately political satire . Witty and enjoyable. The allegory need not be pursued." -- Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction, #1026. Linklater was one of the premier Scottish writers of the early-and-mid 20th century, versatile in his choice of forms but always brimming with vitality and making frequent good use of supernatural motifs in his novels, short stories and plays.
