Karpov meets with the four Directors of the AFA again, and sparks fly, leading to some sinister plots against his life. Then a mission to a distant star also leads to amazing discoveries, one which changes the military situation considerably. Another visit to Mars in in the cards, and an encounter at Draconis with a strange new arrival from the realm of Dark Matter poses a very grave threat, forcing Karpov to again defend the outer Colonies.
