First Edition. The Beginning of Sociology EDEN, Frederic Morton, Sir. The State of the Poor. Or, an History of the Labouring Classes of England, from the Conquest to the presend period; In which are particularly considered, their domestic economy, with respect to Diet, Dress, Fuel, and Hibitation; And the various Plans which, from time to time, have been proposed ,and adopted, for the Relief of the Poor: together with Parochial Reports Relative to the Administration of Work-houses, and Houses of Industry; the State of Friendly Societies; and other Public Institutions; in several Agricultural, Commercial, and Manufacturing, Districts. With a Large Appendix; containing a comparative and chronological table of the prices of labour, of provisions, and of other commodities; an account of the poor of Scotland; and many original documents on subjects of national importance. In Three Volumes. London: J. David, for B.& J. White; G.G. & J. Robinson; T. Payne; R. Faulder; T. Egerton; J. Debrett; and D. Bremmer, 1797. First edition of Eden's classic work. Three quarto volumes (259 x 206 mm). Bound without the final leaf of Volume III, 'Directions to the Binder', which was usually omitted when the book was first bound. Superbly rebound to style by Trevor Lloyd in full tree calf, covers ruled in gilt with a metope-and-septaglyph roll. Spines richly gilt with red morocco lettering pieces, volumes numbered on red oval onlays over black morocco labels, inner dentelles ruled in gilt with a Greek-key roll, marbled endpapers. An excellent copy. Eden, a disciple of Adam Smith, was led to embark on his subject by the high prices brought on by the war in 1794 and 1795, and the harsh effect they had on the living conditions on the poorer classes. "Edens own work, notwithstanding its originality, might now be forgotten if it were not for the invaluable collection of facts attached to it, which can never cease to be of importance. More valuable even than these, however, is the method he adopted of obtaining and systemizing statistically the details of so diffuse a problem; it has proved the basis of sociological investigation ever since" (PMM). In this era, "the outstanding performance was Eden's period. Of particular interest for us in the fact that the author, although he disclaimed any intention beyond what fact-finding implies (he offers some interesting discussions, nevertheless), was fully aware of the importance of his facts, not only for the purpose of legislative and administrative practice but also for economic analysis " (Joseph A. Schumpeter, History of Economic Analysis, p. 275). Karl Marx, in Das Kapital, not forgetting Malthus, described Eden as the only pupil of Adam Smith who achieved anything of significance in the eighteenth century. Goldsmiths' 17107. Kress B3384. Maxwell & Maxwell, A Legal Bibliography, sect. IV Poor Law, p. 14. Printing and the Mind of Man 249. HBS 66847. $13,500.

Eden (1766-1809), a disciple of Adam Smith, was led to embark on his investigation by the high prices brought on by the war in 1794 and 1795, and the harsh effect they had on the living conditions of the poorer classes. His results were published in three volumes, "the first containing a description of the condition of the laboring classes and an analysis of its causes, the other two the supporting facts in the form of parochial reports on the administration of workhouses and houses of industry, friendly societies, and other charitable organizations, with a lengthy series of appendixes, including tables of prices and wages and a list of works on poverty and its alleviation.Eden's own work, notwithstanding its originality, might now be forgotten if it were not for the invaluable collection of facts attached to it, which can never cease to be of importance. More valuable even than these, however, is the method he adopted of obtaining and systemizing statistically the details of so diffuse a problem; it has proved the basis of sociological investigation ever since. Perhaps the greatest tribute to Eden's achievement is that paid to him by Karl Marx in Das Kapital. In den WarenkorbFirst edition of the first major study of the English poor; "it has proved the basis of sociological investigation ever since" (PMM). "The State of the Poor is one of the classical works in the history of economics. Eden was led to embark on the subject by the high prices brought on by the war in 1794 and 1795, and the effect they had on the living conditions of the poorer classes. He established the framework of his investigation by lengthy visits to several parishes; the rest was filled in by his many correspondents up and down the land" (PMM.). Eden describes the condition of the poor and its causes, extensively substantiated with reports of the administration of workhouses and charitable organizations, and lengthy appendixes including much statistical data of prices and wages. It includes a list of works on poverty and its amelioration. Karl Marx cited it in Das Kapital, where he claimed that Eden was the only 18th-century disciple of Adam Smith to produce a work of any significance (pointedly including Malthus). Einaudi 1714; ESTC T145895; Goldsmiths' 17107; Kress B.3384; McCulloch, pp. 285f; Printing and the Mind of Man 249. 3 vols, quarto (264 x 204 mm). Bound with half-titles and all the extra leaves (3L3, v.2; 5B*-5B4, v.3), without terminal binder's direction leaf. With folding letterpress table in vol. III. Contemporary sprinkled calf, twin black calf labels, smooth spines tooled in gilt, gilt roll border to covers, green edges. Twentieth-century pencilled ownership signature to front free endpaper of vol. I. Joints and extremities expertly restored, some light foxing to contents but generally fresh. An excellent copy.

It is important to note that "it was written from a perspective that reveals Eden's general adherence to Adam Smith's system of natural liberty in economic affairs. Eden should be described as an enlightened philanthropist with considerable practical knowledge of poor-law administration, friendly societies, and the insurance principle. He was judiciously unfavourable to legislative provision and government regulation in the Smithian manner, placing his faith in the self-improvement motive" (ODNB). In Das Kapital, Marx claimed that Eden was the only eighteenth-century disciple of Smith to produce a work of any significance (pointedly including Malthus). Recent half calf to style, red morocco labels, marbled sides, top edges gilt, fore edges trimmed, bottom edges uncut. Bindings firm, light spotting, slight loss at lower outer corner of vol.
