"The greater part of Mr Elliot's output cannot be considered as the work of an English poet. It is not so much that he remains outside of the English tradition. Like all traditions, the English tradition has room for newcomers. Mr Elliot will ultimately fit into it easily enough and, what is more, will influence it in the future. Only he too definitely originates in another distinct tradition to be considered quite English yet. The spirit of his poetry is decreasing the American, art, in considering his work, it is essential that his American origin should be kept in mind, otherwise one is in danger of being less than just to his very remarkable personal qualities." The Irish modernist, sometimes MacGreevy, part of the Criterion's roster, offers reflections on Eliot's poetry up to the recent 'Ash Wednesday'. MacGreevy's published output is slim but his association with writers such as Eliot, Joyce, Beckett, and Wallace Stevens indicates its caliber.

Light wear from handling to white boards. In the publisher's dust jacket, bright illustrations, a near fine example. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Attention F.V.M. [Critics bedamned!] from T.S.E." A great association copy to one of Eliot's lifelong friends and an influential editor at Faber and Faber. Thomas McGreevy (1893-1967), an Irish poet and critic, had a professional and personal relationship with American-English poet T.S. Eliot. They first met in Paris in 1920 and maintained a long-lasting correspondence over two decades. McGreevy played a key role in introducing Eliot's writings to Irish audiences and was influential in promoting Eliot's "The Waste Land" in Ireland. Eliot also supported McGreevy's career, both endorsing his poetry and appreciating his critical writings.
