Buch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This open-access book presents recent advances in our understanding of the nano-structure of synaptic junctions in terms of their organization, mechanisms of assembly, and role in neuronal signaling as well as plasticity. Traditionally, a single synapse was assumed to have a homogeneous organization of molecular components both at the active zone and postsynaptically. Recent advances in imaging tools and the further elucidation of the physiological significance of distinct forms of release have challenged this notion. This is a timely book that will richly contribute to the ongoing efforts to develop this novel perspective into the study of the nervous system.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Electrical signaling and synaptic communication are key in the nervous system. Efferent neurons take messages from the CNS to cells in the body, afferent neurons from the body and senses to the CNS. Action potential is generated by the (K+) and (Na+) across the axon's membrane. Neurons at rest have membrane potential of -70 millivolts. Chemical synapses, release neurotransmitters into the gap between two neurons interacting with receptors on the membrane of the postsynaptic neuron, triggering a response. Tight junctions (TJs) attach the presynaptic and postsynaptic membranes closer than chemical synapses, pass electric current directly, using Na+K+Atpases, work faster than chemical synapses. In brain microcirculation TJs control endothelial permeability between blood and CNS. The Blood Brain Barrier, at cerebral blood vessels, controls cerebral homeostasis. Pericytes, microglial cells, astrocytes and neurons regulate endothelial TJs forming the neurovascular unit (NVU). Cell surface receptors are in the plasma membrane of cells, acting in cell signaling. Dopamine deals with movement, in the learning areas with attention. The retina has more TJs than chemical synapses.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - The Synapse summarizes recent advances in cellular and molecular mechanisms of synaptic transmission and provides new insights into neuronal plasticity and the cellular basis of neurological diseases. Part 1 provides an in-depth look at structural differences and distribution of various pre- and post-synaptic proteins found at glutamatergic synapses. Part 2 is dedicated to dendritic spines and their associated perisynaptic glia, which together constitute the tripartite synapse. The spines are portrayed as major sites for calcium sequestration and local protein synthesis. Part 3 highlights the important regional and cellular differences between glutamatergic transmission and that of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and acetylcholine that are commonly found in axon terminals without synaptic membrane specializations. Part 4 provides an overview of the synapse from the time of formation to degeneration under the powerful influence of aging or hormonal decline that leads to severe deficits in cognitive function. Each chapter is illustrated with drawings and images derived from calcium imaging, electron microscopic immunolabeling, or electrophysiology. This book is a valuable reference for neuroscientists and clinical neurologists in both research and clinical settings.
