Intérieur frais sauf sur certaines rares pages où les rousseurs se sont fortement concentrées, comme la majorité des exemplaires de cette édition. Manque la page de titre du premier volume. Nombreuses figures dans le texte (gravures sur bois et à l'eau-forte), une carte dépliante. Seconde édition augmentée. La première édition a paru à Paris l'année précédente (1690), sans le portrait, sans la Préface (par Coste) et sans le Discours sur la Philosophie ancienne et moderne. Deuxième édition publiée quelques mois après la première. L'oeuvre maîtresse de P.-S. Régis, fondamentale dans l'histoire de la diffusion du cartésianisme, portant sur l'ensemble du système philosophique et scientifique de Descartes. Selon sa propre préface, Régis attendit l'autorisation de publier son livre pendant dix années et n'obtint le privilège qu'en ôtant du titre toute référence à Descartes. Une édition a été imprimée, sans autorisation, en Hollande la même année, sous le titre de: 'Cours entier de philosophie ou Système général selon les principes de M. Descartes'. Bien que reçu par ses contemporains comme l'uvre de "Descartes lui-même revenu sur la terre" (Daniel, 'Voyage du monde de M. Descartes'), l'ouvrage contient nombreuses influences extérieures, en particulier Gassendi pour la logique ou Hobbes pour la morale. Nombreuses illustrations sur bois in et hors-texte, dont planches dépliantes. Le dernier volume renferme un précieux "Dictionnaire des termes propres à la philosophie" et une table générale des matières. L'impression se fit pour le compte des libraires associés Anisson, Posuel et Rigaud qui dominaient la librairie lyonnaise et pour lesquels cette publication servit d'introduction sur le marché parisien.
