Sein Verdienst ist es, die hohe Bedeutung der Spiegelinstrumente für die geographische Ortsbestimmung erkannt und befürwortet, sowie auch in deren Handhabung die Reisenden unterwiesen zu haben ." Astronome du Duc Ernst II de Saxe-Cobourg jusqu'en 1806, Zach séjourna en Italie avec la Duchesse de Saxe-Cobourg et publia ces deux ouvrages durant son séjour à Florence.
