TheTestCom2003programconsistedof6technicalsessions,3positionsta- ment sessions, and a special session on interoperability testing. Three invited speeches gave an overview on actual trends in the testing and telecommuni- tion area and formulated requirements to the testing process. The proceedings contain the 19 regular papers accepted and presented at the conference. They were selected from 53 submitted papers in a careful selection procedure based on the assessment of three referees for each paper. The p- ceedings also include the text of the invited talk by Elaine Weyuker, Philippe Cousin, and Ana Cavalli.

The previous events were held in Vancouver, Canada (1988); B- lin, Germany (1989); McLean, USA (1990); Leidschendam, Netherlands (1991); Montreal, Canada (1992); Pau, France (1993); Tokyo, Japan (1994); Evry, France (1995); Darmstadt, Germany (1996); Cheju Island, Korea (1997); Tomsk, R- sia (1998); Budapest, Hungary (1999); Ottawa, Canada (2000); Berlin, Germany (2002); and Sophia Antipolis, France (2003). TestCom was not held in 2001 since at this point the conference moved from autumn to spring. TestCom 2004 was organized by Brunel University, UK and LSR-IMAG, France and was sponsored by IFIP. Support was also provided by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The conference was held at Concordia University, Montr eal, Canada, from May 31 to June 2, 2005. TestCom 2005 was organized by Concordia University and was sponsored by IFIP. Following the trends initiated at the 16th edition of the conference held in Oxford, UK, the rst call for papers issued in summer 2004 called for contri- tions from the general software testing community. The goal of the conference thisyearwas tocontinue the broadeningofthesubject. The themeoftheconf- ence this year is Meeting Software Testing. In response to the call for papers, we received 62 abstracts. Out of these abstracts, 53 turned into paper subm- sions. Each of these submissions was evaluated by at least 3 reviewers from the Technical Programme Committee, with the help of additional co-reviewers when needed. The Programme Committee meeting was held online from January 18 to January 30, 2005. Out of the 53 submitted papers, the Programme C- mittee selected 24 papers covering the traditional topics of TestCom, such as EFSM/FSM model-based testing, and also papers on general software testing re ecting the new trends in the conference. We are very grateful to the keynote speaker, Prof. Tom Maibaum, from McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada. Prof. Maibaum addressed TestCom 2005 on this year s theme. He kindly provided an extended abstract, which is also included in this volume.

In this series of working conferences, held annually since 1988, many valuable contributions have been presented with an emphasis both on the OSI conformance testing methodology and framework as well as the standardization effort on formal methods in conformance testing. While there are stilI open issues and divergencies between theory and practice in these fields, the scope of the series started expanding to related fields of growing practical relevance, for example to testing with regard to the B-ISDN protocol reference model, in particular ATM, the ODP reference model, and the Internet protocol suite, as well as to interoperability testing and performance testing. To reflect the extended scope, the program committee agreed on a new name for this series of working conferences, to be applied the first time to the 1996 conference. However, in order to emphasize the tradition of IWPTS, the numbering of this series was continued, such that IWTCS'96 is counted as the 9th International Workshop on Testing of Communicating Systems. As in the years before, the workshop aims at bringing together researchers and practi tioners, furthering the exchange of views, and correlating the work of both sides.
