It is a developing nation of extraordinary cultural diversity in religion and family life, in economic activity and in the arts. Nowhere is this diversity more evident and more impressive than in the remarkable quality and range of its traditional textiles produced by at least twenty-two different cultural groups on thirteen islands spread throughout the Indonesian Archipelago. Sarawak in northwestern Borneo is one of the three constituent parts of the Federation of Malaysia, the others being Sabah and what was formerly called Malaya. The Iban peoples which inhabit the Second and Third Divisions of Sarawak produce some of the most powerful and distinctive ikat textiles in the world. This exhibition was organized to honor these great textile traditions and the countries, cultural groups, and artisans of which they are a part. It was not, however, designed as a show of rare or old textiles and intentionally does not draw upon major museum collections. Rather the cloths and displays are meant to reflect a variety of cultural, educational and technical as well as aesthetic and antiquarian purposes. In addition, the exhibits in the two museums generally reflect different orientations. The emphasis in the Lowie Museum is primarily cultural and technical; in the University Art Museum it is mainly aesthetic. Both the exhibition and the catalogue were intended as complementary to each other. There is some information and a number of cloths in the exhibition that are not referred to in the catalogue and vice versa. This was done in order to fully exploit the museum spaces and to more completely utilize the cultural and educational opportunities of a publication. …
