The Geneva Bible is one of the most historically significant translations of the Bible into English, preceding the King James Version by 51 years. It was the primary Bible of 16th-century English Protestantism and was used by William Shakespeare, Oliver Cromwell, John Knox, John Donne, and others. It was one of the Bibles taken to America on the Mayflower (Pilgrim Hall Museum has collected several Bibles of Mayflower passengers). Robert Barker's Bible is frequently sold on the market, often accompanied by the concordances and the Book of Psalms. The Book of Common Prayer is a separate publication. However, Barker's Bible is usually sold with missing pages, and it can be challenging to find a complete copy for sale. The additional Book of Common Prayer is always sold as a separate volume.

Note: The nickname Goose Bible is derived from the bird in the device to the title page of the Metrical Psalms. This Geneva version, printed in Dordt, is more accurate than the other versions and closely follows the printing of the 1560 first edition Geneva Bible. The majority of Geneva Bibles dated 1599 were printed in Amsterdam after King James banned the printing of the Geneva Bible in 1616 to encourage the production of his sponsored translation. The Geneva Bible remained popular and began to be printed on the continent and imported into England. Archbishop Laud banned the importation of the Geneva Bible into England in the 1630s, forcing printers to add a title page claiming they were printed in London by Christopher Barker in 1599 to continue importation. The popularity of the Geneva Bible remained steadfast for over 100 years, and the vast number of 1599 Geneva Bibles available today serve as clear evidence that the King James Bible did not become the dominant text very quickly. A Bible probably printed for the use of English puritans in the Low Countries in the early 17th century. The metrical psalms are included, with a separate title and register. The Geneva version, translated by William Whittingham and other Marian exiles, went through more than 70 editions between 1560 and 1640. Although folio versions were produced for pulpit use, this was primarily a household Bible, typically printed as here in small, manageable quartos. Geneva Bibles with 1599 imprints have a complex bibliographical history. Herbert identifies at least eight distinct editions, and notes that "the nominal date, 1599, is probably untrue in almost every case; they were apparently published at different times in Amsterdam and Dort and adopted by Barker" (p. 115). The present text (Herbert's edition B), was printed from the earliest of these editions "at a somewhat later date" (p. 116). Geneva Bibles with 1599 imprints reprint the previous Geneva quartos in Roman type, albeit with Franciscus Junius's vehemently antipapal translation of Revelations - a change replicated in most Roman-type editions from 1602 onwards. Many such Bibles were smuggled into England during the upsurge of Laudianism in 1633 (Betteridge, p. 44). Darlow & Moule 189; Herbert 249. Maurice Betteridge, "The Bitter Notes: The Geneva Bible and Its Annotations", The Sixteenth Century Journal, Vol. 14, No. 1, 1983. Quarto in eights (217 x 169 mm). Late 17th-century or early 18th-century English panelled calf with alternating light and dark panels, neatly rebacked to style, spine with raised bands tooled in blind and red morocco label, covers with fillets and tooled borders in blind, floral corner tools, edges red. Engraved title page, letterpress title page with woodcut vignette, divisional titles, woodcut initials, tailpieces, and illustrations in the text. Contemporary ink inscription of "Cha. Pax His Book" to title page. Covers and extremities professionally restored. Light rubbing and marks to calf, minor browning, foxing, and damp-staining to endpapers and contents, engraved title page soiled and creased, upper outer quarter of OO8 torn away with resulting loss of text, upper outer corner of Fff8 chipped, affecting only the headline and foliation. A very good copy.

Textually complete 1584 Geneva Bible in an attractive binding which begins with Genesis, continuing through the Old Testament and the Apocrypha, followed by the New Testament and Two Concordances but lacking the general title and preliminaries. 1580s Geneva Bibles are increasingly scarce and this example has been owned by the same Manchester family for 150 years PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Attractively bound quarto (21x16cm) with an early 17th century upper board, a later 17th century panelled calf lower board and the spine sympathetically rebacked around 1900. New front flyleaf and pastedown inserted during this last restoration; first flyleaf with 19th century ownership inscription of 'D L Ginger' and below a gift inscription to a 'Dr Barker'; second flyleaf torn. First three leaves of Genesis with paper repairs to gutter but the book collates complete: ff554 - 1108 pages followed by A-M4 Two Concordances. Browning throughout; margins close cropped; very little annotation apart from an italic hand written c1600 on the verso of the New Testament title page, 'Purifie our harts we bessech the most gratious god.'. TEXT begins with Genesis, Chapter I, Verse I, therefore lacking the general title and preliminary pages. The Old Testament has been collated and is complete through to leaf number 444, followed by a complete New Testament with its own dated title page set inside a woodcut border. The Two Right Profitable and Fruitfull Concordances have the preface by Robert F Herrey, dated 1578 and this imprint dates from the early 1580s. The Bible is printed in black letter type in two columns with frequent notes and marginal commentary. Noted during collation: f204, closed tear at head of page; ff316-7, semicircular loss at head of page, 7cm wide, touching first 5 lines of text; f341, narrow semicircular loss, 2cm wide, 5 cm deep, head of page; f440, old paper repair to foreedge, touching Barker's 'Tigre Reo' device printed below the Questions on Predestination; f466, outer top corner, just touching marginal note; f520, lower third of leaf diagonally missing; f526, lower sixth of leaf missing; f533 lower outer corner of leaf missing 5x4cm; Concordances, M1, upper, outer corner, 3x3cm. This collation doesn't seem to match any known example of a Barker Bible but is closely related to Darlow and Moule 165, a Geneva Bible of 1580 with the same collation and Barker's device after Malachi, on the title page of the Concordances and above the colophon on the last page. A small cut of the royal arms is also found at the end of Revelation. PROVENANCE Mr Alfred Richardson, Manchester Church Warden and by descent for three generations, shown at a Manchester Bible Exhibition which was advertised as an attempt to locate the oldest Bible still in private hands within the city. HISTORY The Geneva Bible was first issued in England in 1575 and it would become the Bible of Shakespeare, Milton and Bunyan, as well as the Pilgrim Fathers. In the words of Cleland Boyd McAfee, its forceful and vigorous readings "drove the Great Bible off the field by sheer power of excellence". The key advantage of this Bible was its size. As a quarto it could easily be held and read, making it the first domestic Elizabethan Bible. The care and maintenance given this volume means that it is in a suitable condition to be read and actively enjoyed.
