First edition, first issue of Tolkien's classic tale, "among the very highest achievements of childrenâ s authors during the 20th centuryâ (Carpenter & Pritchard, 530), one of only a handful of presentation copies reserved for Tolkien to give to family members, colleagues and close friends. Octavo, original cloth, cartographic endpapers, frontispiece and 9 full-page uncolored illustrations after drawings by Tolkien. Presentation copy, inscribed by Tolkien on the flyleaf, "Mr. & Mrs. Livesley & Edgar with best wishes from J.R.R. Tolkien." The recipients, the Livesleys and their son Edgar, ran the Kennaway House, a Regency town house in the village of Sidmouth, East Devon which Tolkien used as a summer holiday home and the surrounds of which inspired the landscapes, flora, and fauna of The Shire", the region of Middle-earth inhabited hobbits first introduced in The Hobbit. Situated on the rocky coast of the rustic Devon countryside, the village of Sidmouth has featured in a number of famed literary works, as "Stymouth" in Beatrix Potter's children's story The Tale of Little Pig Robinson (1930), "Idmouth" in Thomas Hardy's Wessex, "Baymouth" in William Makepeace Thackeray's Pendennis, and "Spudmouth" in The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle. English poet Elizabeth Barrett lived in the town from 1832 until 1835. In the final stages of The Hobbit's revisions, Tolkien notably penned a list of special recipients he wished to present copies of the first printing of the book to upon publication, including C.S. Lewis, R.W. Chambers, R.W. Chambers, Simone dâ Ardenne, George S. Gordon, Elaine Griffiths, his aunts Mabel Mitton and Florence Hadley, and the Livesleys who hosted him at the Kennaway House. Published on September 21, 1937, the first printing of the Hobbit constituted only 1500 copies and completely sold out by December 15th. In near fine condition. Housed in a custom full morocco clamshell box. An exceptional association of the most highly coveted work in fantasy literature. "In enchanted Middle-earth, a small, comfort-loving Hobbit is awakened from his slumbers by a visitor who tells of lost treasure. Before Bilbo Baggins returns home again, he journeys past wizards and elves, talkative trees and treasure-guarding dragons, all swirling in cosmic battle between good and evil. J.R.R. Tolkien's fully realized fantasy world won over generations of children, and dazzled adults with its deft interweaving of medieval legend and made-up languages, maps, and creatures. Tolkien legitimized the modern fantasy genre, and provided the 1960's counterculture with antiwar, back-to-Eden icons" (NYPL Books of the Century 199). â Professor Tolkienâ s epic of Middle Earthâ ¦ [is] one of [the twentieth] centuryâ s lasting contributions to that borderland of literature between youth and age. There are few such booksâ "Gulliverâ s Travels, The Pilgrimâ s Progress, Robinson Crusoe, Don Quixote, Alice in Wonderland, The Wind in the Willowsâ "what else?â ¦ [They are] destined to become this centuryâ s contribution to that select list of books which continue through the ages to be read by children and adults with almost equal pleasureâ (Eyre, 67, 134-5). "All historians of childrenâ s literatureâ ¦ agree in placing [The Hobbit] among the very highest achievements of childrenâ s authors during the 20th centuryâ (Carpenter & Prichard, 254, 530). Published on September 21, 1937 in a first printing of only 1500 copies, The Hobbit had completely sold out by December 15. â It may have been a surprise to its publishers that a work as sui generis as The Hobbit should have been a popular success, but once it was a success there can have been no surprise in the clamor for a sequel. Tolkien had opened up a new imaginative continent, and the cry now was to see more of itâ (Shippey, 49).

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. No Jacket. Extremely Rare Signed Sixth Impression of The Hobbit with Quenya Inscription by J.R.R. Tolkien. J.R.R. Tolkien. Published George Allen & Unwin in 1971, signed by J.R.R. Tolkien. If you're a collector of J.R.R. Tolkien's work, then this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own an incredibly rare copy of The Hobbit, signed by the author himself. This sixth impression edition from 1971 is a unique find, featuring a personal inscription in Quenya, one of the Elvish languages invented by Tolkien himself. The inscription reads 'tolkīn' in Quenya, making it the only known example of Tolkien writing his name in Elvish in a book. Although the book has no jacket and shows some signs of wear, including small stains and signs of wear on the covers, the textblock remains clean and fine throughout, with some wear noted. One of the illustrations has come loose, but the rest of the book remains intact. The signature and inscription can be found on the same page, alongside an owner signature from B. Haunch. Overall, this unique and collectible copy of The Hobbit is a fine addition to any Tolkien collection, and a must-have for serious collectors. Don't miss your chance to own a piece of literary history and add this incredibly rare signed edition to your collection. Own a Piece of Literary History with this Unique and Collectible Copy of The Hobbit. Signed by Author(s).

Jacket has a small paper loss to top right spine corner and several closed tears. Bright with no foxing. Outstanding condition. Invest today! About restoration. When no more first edition Hobbits with original dust jackets exist, ever, the restored jacket with the minimal restoration might become an option. However, it will only be worth what the original damaged jacket was worth. Restoration adds no value and trying to boost its value falsely with restoration to the same as an original is a complete deception. We think restored copies says more about the buyer, not the seller, caring more about how they look not the item they are buying. Be authentic, buy authentic!.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION FIRST PRINTING. 1 vol., 7-11/16" x 5-5/8", Frontispiece & 8 B&W plates and one vignette by Tolkien, advertisement leaf at end, top edge of textblock tinted green, bound in the publisher's original stamped green cloth, map pastedowns and endpapers, internally clean and bright, no foxing, no lean to the spine, inner and outer hinges fine, head and foot of spine fine, back corners square, lower rear corner of the foot of the spine rubbed with some slight loss, completely unsophisticated without any repairs, neat ownership signature of Betty Jean Orton dated Xmas 1937 to front blank endleaf, A NEAR FINE COPY. Provenance: Betty Jean Orton is the daughter of Harold Orton (1898-1975), English dialectologist and lexicographer remembered for his monumental Survey of English Dialects (1962-72). Tolkien began writing The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, as a Professor of English Language and Literature at Oxford University. Tolkien's creative perspective was born from a childhood spent briefly in South Africa and then rural England, a short but wretched tour during World War I, and an avid fascination with German philology. Although it was originally billed as a children's book, The Hobbit attracted a varied audience and has been wildly popular since its initial publication. Tolkien built upon the tradition of fantasy literature developed by George MacDonald, Lewis Carroll, and the folk tales of Arabian Nights by inventing a new language?Elvish?and making it accessible for modern-day readers. Such creativity brought rave reviews for The Hobbit. 1,500 copies were published on Sept. 21, 1937 and were sold out by December. Less then three months after publication. REFERENCE: Currey 476; Hammond A3a.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. 1st Edition. Condition: Near-Fine. 1st edition: 4th impression, so stated on the limitation page. The only real defect on the book is a small stain on the text block fore edge. The book is very clean inside and out, and the covers and spine are clean and bright. The text is also clean and bright. The maps of Lonely Mountain in the front and Wilderland in the back are also clean and bright, with just a tiny hint of age browning on the edge of the Wilderland free end paper. A 1-inch tear has been closed and repaired at the bottom of pps. 127-128, and the front free endpaper map page has 2 very slight creases, one on the upper right corner, and another on the following blank page. The book has been conserved, and Tolkien's famous original jacket has in addition been expertly restored to near-pristine condition. The 4th impression was the last printing of Tolkien's original story, before his revisions to the book in the early 1950s to more closely comport with the story of The Lord of the Rings, then in progress.

Soft cover. Zustand: Good. The Hobbit Heritage of Literature Edition Uncorrected Proof J.R.R. Tolkien. Published Heritage of Literature Edition, Longmans, London, 1966 This Book is in Good Condition. Marks of cellotape on the first pages, several pages loose. A lot of wear and stains on text block and pages. Does not have Thror s Map and the Map of Wilderland on the endpapers. Tolkien's black and white illustrations are not included. J.R.R.Tolkien the Hobbit proofs are very rare to find and extremely rare Tolkien collectables This one with Tolkien's name misspelled on the front cover as 'Tolkren'. The book has no title pages, it just starts with 1. An unexpected party and Tolkien's most famous opening line "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort." and the book ends with "You are a very fine person, Mr. Baggins, and I am very fond of you; but you are only quite a little fellow in a wide world after all! 'Thank goodness! ' said Bilbo laughing, and handed him the tobacco jar." And these two sentences sum up so completely what the book is about. There are only ever a very small amount of these made and they are almost never for sale. I have never seen another one in 30 years. The exterior red and white paper shows some wear to the corner tips, signs of discoloration, and some cracking and minor fraying at the spine. It shows the Longmans name and logo in checkered pattern. Part of the "uncorrected proof label" missing. This proof copy is the ultimate Tolkien Collectors Dream.

Only 2,300 copies were printed of this edition, of which 423 copies in sheets were destroyed in the bombing of London in 1940. The coloured versions of the illustrations "had been commissioned for their first American edition, and were in the American publisher's hands when Allen & Unwin decided to include them in the second impression. The original art was called back for reproduction in Britain, then returned across the Atlantic" (Hammond & Anderson p. 15). The first edition was published on 21 September 1937 and the first impression of 1,500 copies sold out by December. Hammond & Anderson A3. Octavo. FIRST EDITION SECOND IMPRESSION AND THE FIRST WITH COLOR PLATES. 1 vol., 7-1/2" x 5-1/2", 5 plates (4 colour), 8 illustrations by the author, advertisement leaf at end, bound in full dark green morocco, ribbed gilt decorated spine, covers ruled in gilt, Smaug the dragon gilt to lower right corner of the front cover, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled pastedowns and endpapers, original cloth covers and spine bound in rear, original front and rear map pastedowns and endpapers bound in, by Bayntun, IN AS NEW CONDITION. Published in the same year as the first and the first edition to include colour plates. Such creativity brought rave reviews for The Hobbit, which sold out of its original print run of 1,500 copies three months after publication.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. The present example was owned by Tolkien's uncle, W.B. Incledon who later gifted it to a friend. Inscribed by Incledon: C.S.C. / from / W.B. Incledon. / Rottingdean / Jan? 1938/ Published in the same year as the first impression, this first colour illustrated edition (second impression overall) is the first time the world saw Middle-Earth in colour. This impression was printed in December of 1937 in an edition of 2300 copies (423 of which were destroyed at the warehouse of the binder, Key and Whiting, in the bombing of London on November 7th 1940). This example with the connection to the Tolkien family is one of a kind and has been held in the consignee's family by descent since 1938. One does presume that the book was originally given to his uncle by Tolkien himself. First colour illustrated edition. 8vo. A VG+ to near-fine example. Original publishers green cloth. Minor wear to the extremities of the cloth Presentation inscription from Tolkien's uncle. Internally fresh. A one of a kind example with a connection to Tolkien's uncle. Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1942) The Hobbit or There and Back Again , UK first book club edition using the first edition, third impression sheets, published by The Children s Book Club by arrangement with George Allen & Unwin. Condition: a near fine copy. There are no previous owners inscriptions, names, no bookplates, no stamps. The original chrome yellow boards are in nice shape with a little shelf wear and light tonong to the spine. The lettering on the spine is nicely visible with just a touch of rubbing as shown. Internally clean with no illustrations coloured in as often found. The page block with a whiff of faint foxing spots as shown, otherwise unmarked. The war economy standard paper used for this edition is preserved remarkably well. The original dust jacket is not present. Publication history: In late 1942 George Allen & Unwin printed 1,500 copies of a third impression and 3,000 copies for the children s book club to be sold by Foyles. The sheets were supplied to Foyles unbound and they were bound in cheaper boards without the dragon design familar with the regular trade edition. Also, no maps as endpapers were used. As opposed to Tolkien s own beautiful dust jacket, an orange-red wrapper showing a fat, dandified Bilbo. Tolkien loathed the design so much that it was not repeated again and this book club edition has remained an anomaly in the early publication history of the much loved childrens book. Since the boards used are much thinner and the paper the economy standard it is difficult to find copies that have survived the passage of time in decent condition if at all since book club editions tend to be unloved or discarded. First and Fine.

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. This is the 1st US Edition, 1st state. SD. NAP. With the bowing hobbit on the title page; chapter VII mis-identified as chapter VI on page 118; and pastedown maps are reverse of order shown on the "List of Illustrations" page. The four color and nine B&W illustrations are present. Good, in a new facsimile dustjacket. Typical flaws as seen in such a well-loved, well-read book (photos attached). There is wear at the spine extremities, and at the corner tips; and some wear along the front outer hinge. The spine is sun-darkened, but the lettering appears unaffected. There is rubbed surface soil to the boards; with a few small stains, and two thin ~3/8" pen marks on the rear board. The front hinge is split between the first blank and the frontis; shaken. The rear hinge is cracked. The page edges are typically age-darkened, and the endpapers are slightly so. There is a tasteful bookplate on the first blank (with a previous owners name and 1938 date). There is a small, light stain at the fore-edge of the reverse of the frontis (not visible in the frontis illustration). There is a fairly light stain along the fore-edge of the rear flyleaf (visible only on the blank side; not on the map face). The facsimile DJ is new. A scarce edition in any condition. ; 27D; 8" x 6"; 310 pages.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Limited Edition. The Folio Society 2002-2003 Deluxe Numbered editions, each limited to 1750 copies. The Hobbit is number 699, The Lord of The Rings is number 714, and The Silmarillion is 1217. Beautifully quarter bound in Wassa goatskin leather and fine hand woven Indian silk. The slipcases are also bound in Wassa goatskin leather and with gilt lettering and decorative design by John Andrew to the front of the slipcase and the spine of the books. The books have gilt top edges and a silk page ribbon. The Hobbit book has maps for endpapers, with Thror's map at the front and a map of Wilderland at the back, and with numerous illustrations by Eric Fraser. The Silmarillion has illustrations by Francis Mosley and a fold out map at the back. The Lord of The Rings books have greyish green maps for endpapers and illustrations by Ingahild Grathmer, drawn by Eric Fraser. They were bound by Smith Settle of Otley, Yorks. This exclusive release was published in 2002-2003. The books were taken from the regular Folio Society edition print run of the time and specially rebound, and therefore these also have the publication page which shows the hobbit, fellowship, two towers, and return of the king seventh printing 2002, and the silmarillion fourth printing 2003, but ultimately these are their own special editions. Condition is near fine, just some very slight imperfections in the silk sides as is always the case with these as a result of them being hand made, also there are a couple of very minor scuffs to the edges of slipcases, one book has a tiny mark to the edge of page block but they are clean, bright, free from inscriptions, square, securely bound.
