First Edition. Octavo : pp.iv, 62 : portrait of Hume engraved by T. Cook : contemporary marbled paper wraps. Lacks half title and advertisement, otherwise complete. The paper wraps are considerably edgeworn and frayed; the spine is largely chipped with the gatherings exposed. The portrait is stained and there is some offsetting from the print to the title page which is chipped at the head and bears an ownership inscription in ink. The remaining leaves are toned at the edges, worn and chipped with a large open tear at the tail of p.23. Comment penned on verso of top cover reads, "A most admirable specimen of Autobiography to be met with in all literature. M.S." Written shortly before his death, Hume had intended his Life to be prefixed to his next published edition of his Works. The Life ends on p.35 and the rest is taken up with Adam Smith's letter to W. Strahan describing Hume's last days. [Jessop p.39].

A later Cadell eight volume edition of The History of England by David Hume, first published in six volumes, 1754-61, The later sections, leading up to the Revolution of 1688 were published first as The History of Great Britain, and the author took the history back in subsequent volumes. Although Hume's interpretation of English history was controversial, the work was also considered by many to be the standard history of its period and proved to be a best seller for the renowned Scottish philosopher and historian, appearing in numerous later editions. This 1802 edition includes at the beginning, The Life of David Hume, written by himself dated 1776. The principal arrangement is by monarch with occasional general sections on the government of England, etc. Notes are at the end of each volume except Volume VIII which contains a general index of 110 pages. 8vo, 173 x 102 mms., pp. 16, new boards and end-papers. A very good copy. Shortly after David Hume died 25 August 1776, Smith described Hume in a letter to William Strahan, the publisher, that "Upon the whole, I have always considered him, both in his lifetime and since his death, as approaching as nearly to the idea of a perfectly wise and virtuous man, as perhaps the nature of human frailty will permit." This assessment, published in 1777, in an edition of Hume's My Own Life, not only led to further attacks on Hume but on the blameless and cautious Smith, who found himself mired in obloquy for his friendship, not unlike a certain controversy respecting a university building in Edinburgh no longer name The David Hume Tower. George Horne (1730 - 1792), in 1777, issued his anonymous Letter to Dr. Adam Smith LL.D by one of the People called Christians, a rather vicious, though sometimes amusing attack on both Smith and Hume, with Horne asserting that Hume was a man "possessed with an incurable antipathy to all that is called RELIGION." Given that Hume had written to Heny Home (later Lord Kames, 1696 - 1782), in in June, 1747, confiding that "the Church is my Aversion," there is possibly a very small element of truth in Horne's assertion.
