Kein Einband. Zustand: Neu. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Neu. 1. Auflage. London: Penguin, 1988. A fine original paperback jacket for the 1988 Penguin edition of the Satanic Verses. Very, very rare. Almost all of the copies of the paperback edition (reportedly 5'000) were pulped. An estimated 500 found their way to the Frankfurt Book Fair and some bookshops in Switzerland and Malta, but even those were quickly withdrawn. Explanations about the reasons for the early paperback edition differ: a. it was printed as an export edition for the Indian market, allegedly to forestall piracies and to promote Penguin India, and/or b. it was made available for the October 1988 Frankfurt Book Fair to promote Penguin as a publisher of paperbacks concurrent with first editions of hardback copies. This wrapper was never bound with the book and is extremely scarce: in fact it is much rarer than the bound book. Only two copies have come into the market in the last 30 years. And we sold the other one. This certainly is one of the most iconic wrappers in the history of English fiction and Penguin (not) publishing. Please note that even though the complete book might seem more desirable, it is not nearly as scarce. And we can procure you a paperback at a much lower price than you would have to pay for the wrapper only. This item is part of our Catalogue 4: The Rushdie Collection, which you can download at ygrbooks.

A set of four items relating to one of the most controversial books of the last century. Consisting: 'Transcript of the novel - photosstat copies of typed pages - from Wylie, Aitken & Stone Literary Agents, London, 1988. Pre-publication, literary agent's US and UK details to the title page. The work is a 616 A4 page photocopy of Rushdie's original typescript, with the author's multiple manuscript revisions and corrections. Signed to the final page. The transcript is stored in a custom made black card box. 'The Satanic Verses Proof' - famous for having no title page. In very good condition with usual signs of wear. The set is completed by both the exceptionally rare first trade edition in the purple variant dust wrapper with £12.95 as the pre-publication price. The book has been signed by Rushdie, and the usual blue wrappered trade edition with Whitbread wrap-raound band and signed to the Booker shortlist label on the front endpaper. A rare set of items. The British publication of Salman Rushdie's "The Satanic Verses" in 1988 sparked a global controversy and ignited debates on freedom of expression and religious sensitivities. The novel explores themes of identity and religion through a magical realist lens. Its depiction of the Prophet Muhammad led to protests, fatwas, and death threats from some Muslim leaders. The British government supported Rushdie's right to free speech, but the bookstores faced bomb threats, and its publication triggered a heated international discourse. The "Rushdie Affair" remains a significant chapter in the ongoing discussion of religious tolerance, censorship, and artistic expression.

Softcover. Zustand: Wie neu. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Neu. 1. Auflage. London: Viking, 1988. Pages browning, else a fine copy of the Uncorrected Advance Proof in a fine proof dustwrapper. Signed and titled by Rushdie on the title page. Though there seem to be no textual differences to the first trade edition, the proof of The Satanic Verses has some unique features. For instance, there are no ornamental devices separating the sub-chapters, and the "Acknowledgements" page (549) is missing completely. Also, the beginning of the "Ayesha" chapter provides for numerical sub-divisions, which is unnecessary as there are none. This copy had no title on the tile page, so Rushdie kindly supplied it in his own writing. We have never seen any copies with the printed title of the book on the title page. The proof dustwrapper varies from the one of the first UK edition in that it is matt (though we have also had one glossy one), uses a different and bolder typeface for the lettering of the author's name and the title, has a box at the bottom of the inner flap and mentions both the UK and the US publishers at the bottom of the lower flap. The book is in Fine condition and has been signed again (without dedication) by the author to the title page. In this title, Salman Rushdie details the controversy surrounding the publication of The Satanic Verses and his defence of the novel. First edition, first impression, signed by the author on the title page. The furious international controversy this novel sparked has been described as "one of the most significant events in postwar literary history" (Kureishi). Rushdie, who had long been under police protection since its publication, suffered an attack over the novel in 2022. He reflects on this in Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder (2024). The New York Times spoke highly of its literary merit soon after publication: "In its entirety, it resembles only itself, but there are, in its parts, strands and shades of resemblance: to Sterne, for one, in the joys of digression; to Swift in scathingness of political satire; to the fairy and folktales of the Brothers Grimm, to Ovid's Metamorphoses, The Arabian Nights, Thomas Mann's Transposed Heads, [and more]". Hanif Kureishi, "Looking back at Salman Rushdie's The Satanic Verses", The Guardian, 14 Sept. 2012; A. G. Mojtabai, "Magical Mystery Pilgrimage", The New York Times, 29 Jan. 1989. Octavo. Original blue boards, spine lettered in gilt. With supplied dust jacket. Tiny puncture to front cover, splash mark to rear cover and bottom edge, foxing to edges, contents clean, inner hinge starting at title page; unclipped jacket, vertical crease to sunned spine, light rubbing to edges: a very good copy in like jacket.

The jacket is completely unfaded, a very rare attribute with most copies having some sunning at the spine. This copy is the same deep blue tone across all of the jacket. There is tiny amounts of wear to the corner tips. The book is in excellent condition with only a very small handful of tiny flecks to the text block. The copyright page shows a full number line down to 1 as called for, for a first edition. The author Salman Rushdie has signed his name without dedication to the title page. Signed copies have become uncommon in recent times and are scarce in this very near fine condition. Rushdie's award winning book that has been perceived as blasphemous by some. It has caused controversy and censorship in a handful of countries. Rushdie has been the target of attacks and attempted assassination over it. It was his fourth book where he continued to write within the realms of magic realism. A scarce book with the attributes described. . Signed by Author(s).

"One of the most controversial and acclaimed novels ever written, The Satanic Verses is Salman Rushdie s best-known and most galvanizing book. Set in a modern world filled with both mayhem and miracles, the story begins with a bang: the terrorist bombing of a London-bound jet in midflight. Two Indian actors of opposing sensibilities fall to earth, transformed into living symbols of what is angelic and evil. This is just the initial act in a magnificent odyssey that seamlessly merges the actual with the imagined. Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. 1st Edition. Rushdie's controversial 1989 novel has become newly relevant in the current debate about limits on free speech. This is a fine copy (both the book and the dust jacket) of the first edition. The dark blue cloth-bound boards are unmarked and there are no scratches or bumps; all edges are straight, all corners are sharp. There is however, a small dent in the lower right area of the front board. The text block is square and tightly bound and its edges, top, fore and bottom, are all spotless, though there is a tiny amount of shelfwear on the bottom edge near where it meets the fore-edge. Internally, the pages are all clean and unmarked with the exception of the ffep where there is a previous resale price, neatly written in pencil, in the top right corner. The dust jacket retains its original gloss and crispness and there are no marks, tears, chips or unwanted creases. The colours of the artwork remain strong and vivid. There have been no excisions and the publisher's price (£12.95) is still in place. Overall this is a remarkably well preserved copy, which still looks new and comes close to qualifying for the 'as new' category. Please see five photos of this book and we would be happy to provide more if that would help.
