First edition, first state with 13 for 138 on p.[iii] and "w shed" on p.56. First issue binding stamped "Spencer Blackett's Standard Library". Original red cloth with black decorative border and gilt titles. A fine copy. Exceptionally bright and crisp, with just the slightest toning to the spine. Internally fresh with perfect hinges. A superb copy, the finest we have encountered. Frontispiece by Charles Kerr. The second Sherlock Holmes novel owes its inception to a meeting between Doyle and J.M.Stoddart of Lippincott's Magazine, organized by Cornhill's James Payn, in which Doyle agreed to write a story for the magazine. Stoddart asked for a spicy title and Doyle replied, "I shall give Sherlock Holmes of "A Study in Scarlet" something else to unravel.". The novel enjoyed muted success in America and appeared in England as part of Spencer Blackett's Standard Library series in October 1890. Again sales were modest and much of the edition was still in the form of unbound sheets when Griffin Farrar took over Spencer Blacket in 1891. However, with a resurgence of interest aroused by the Strand Magazine's serialising of The Adventures of Sherlock Homes, Griffin Farrar quickly bound up the remaining sheets with their imprint at the base of the spine, which forms the secondary issue. Copies of the first issue are scarce in any condition and genuinely rare in fine condition. Green & Gibson A7a; De Waal 279.

First issue binding stamped "Spencer Blackett's Standard Library" to the base of the spine. A lovely near fine copy. Boards exceptionally clean and bright with the merest hint of toning to the spine. The gilt lettering to the front board and spine is really bright and with none of the usual dulling. Frontispiece, by Charles Henry Malcolm Kerr lacks the tissue guard, and without publisher's catalogue to the rear found in some copies. W.H. Smith and Son blind stamp to the front free end-paper. Internally clean and fresh. Front hinge starting (a common fault with this book). Spine tips slightly pushed. A very nice copy indeed. Green & Gibson A7a; De Waal 279. Conan Doyle', page 40). Green and Gibson A7 Size: 8vo.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Doyle, Arthur Conan. THE SHERLOCK HOLMES LONG STORIES: A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Valley of Fear. 4 Volumes in 1. London: John Murray, (1929). First Edition, first impression. A Near Fine copy in bright red original publisher's cloth, rarely seen this nice. Slightly bowed, 1934 gift inscription to the front free endpaper, some light foxing to the edges, rich red topstain unfaded. In a Near Fine or better Original Priced (7/6) Dust Jacket (a few small edge nicks and a tiny, closed edge tear but otherwise superb with no repair and completely unfaded red lettering to the DJ's spine panel. This important omnibus edition was the first collected printing of the four novels together with a new preface by Doyle. And this example is a truly beautiful collector's copy of the Long Stories, with unfaded red cloth and unfaded red lettering to the dust jacket spine. Acquiring this particular copy of THE SHERLOCK LONG STORIES omnibus means getting a book which is likely fifty times rarer in terms of condition, for three-times the retail of the inevitable mediocre copy.

Buch Erstausgabe
First edition. 283 pages. A restoration project or a spare part, the book is bound in the original publisher's boards, correctly stamped "Spencer Blackett's Standard Library" to the bottom of the spine and the text of the story is complete and with the requisite issue point "w shed" rather than "wished" to page 56, but the book opens at the start of chapter 1 with all prior pages roughly removed, i.e. no front endpaper, no frontispiece, no title page and no Contents. The outer boards are slightly marked and rubbed, the corners are bumped, the spine is age darkened and dulled with small tears to the cloth at the ends. The boards are still broadly attached to the text block, though pulling away at the front gutter where the pages have been removed, the front pastedown has a small area of loss at the gutter, the rest of the text block is still quite firm, it is slightly age toned and dusty, with minor foxing and some staining to a few leaves, also a few dog-eared corners and there is loss to the margins of some page edges that have been roughly opened but with no loss of text, it is slightly cracked at points, the original rear endpaper and pastedown are present though the gutter is cracked with the webbing showing slightly. A rough, incomplete, though not irredeemable, first edition of the second Sherlock Holmes novel.
