Hardcover decorative full cloth. As-is, with superficial rubbing and light staining to exterior. Light bumping to corners. Cracking to front hinge, with detached frontispiece and tissue guard. Illustrated throughout, with both black-and-white in-text illustrations and four color plates. Plate II located one page earlier than stated in index. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photos and ask any questions prior to purchasing. A rather scarce piece on introductory geology by Gideon Mantell (1790-1852), an English geologist and obstetrician. A great piece for restoration. COLN1849BJKX.

All edges gilt. Portrait frontis with tissue guard (with attractive offsetting from portrait), vignette title page. 4 wonderfully coloured chromolitho plates plus 28 illustrations in text. Some marks to rear endpapers, and tiny ownership sticker to front pastedown. Some children's pencil marks on pages, mostly erased. Inner hinge visible, but holding, at list of plates. Illustrations are referred to as lignographs (abv. lign), Mantell was the only person to ever use this term. It did not catch on.

Leather. Zustand: Fair. Seventh Edition. Two chromo-litho color plates, numerous monochrome illustrations. The contents are in very good condition, the front cover nearly detached, otherwise a good, solid copy. The tissue guard on the second plate has pulled a bit of coloring.

Half title, colour front. & one other colour plate, woodcut illus. in text, 4pp. ads. Orig. blue-green cloth, a little dulled. A nice copy. Booksellers ticket of H. Whitmore, Manchester. 54pp. This is a landmark in popular geology and early editions are scarce. Originally published in Leigh Hunt's London Journal, the first edition in 18pp, Relfe & Fletcher, is in BL only on Copac. There are no 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th editions recorded; the sixth is published by Relfe & Fletcher, 1842, in 42pp. This 7th edition is not recorded but the 8th, Reeve, Benham and Reeve, is expanded to 102pp.

An expanded edition, now in its fullest & final form, with a portrait (offset to the title) & 4 hand coloured lithograph plates and 27 woodcuts (styled 'lignographs') to the letterpress, published at 5s. 'Prompted by the intelligent questions of his nine year old son, Mantell recounted the life-history of a flint pebble that he had picked up in a stream bed not far from his home in Brighton. Mantell's eloquent review of geological fundamentals, far too sophisticated for most nine year olds, included poetical quotations from Scott, Byron, and Beattie. In its final edition, however, the emphasis of the work as a whole shifted from stimulation to edification, appending facts outweighing initial ideas. It had genuinely become a book in its own right, and was, like all of Mantell's, full of original research and expresssion.'- Dean. pp. xiv,5-102,[4],4,[2], Without the half-title.
