His idle newspaper game is, in fact, the only thing preserving Earth's military dictatorship from destruction in the Lunar-Terran conflict." Mass market paperback. Original pictorial paper wrappers. Dick's science fiction novel, Time Out of Joint, a twisty and paranoid tale of one man's realization that the world he recognizes is just an illusion. This is a true 1st American trade edition, 1st printing of the work published by J. B. Lippincott in 1959. The dust jacket is protected from further wear by a Brodart sleeve. ********************************************************* "Time Out of Joint is Philip K. Dick s classic depiction of the disorienting disparity between the world as we think it is and the world as it actually is. The year is 1998, although Ragle Gumm doesn t know that. He thinks it s 1959. He also thinks that he served in World War II, that he lives in a quiet little community, and that he really is the world s long-standing champion of newspaper puzzle contests. It is only after a series of troubling hallucinations that he begins to suspect otherwise. And once he pursues his suspicions, he begins to see how he is the center of a universe gone terribly awry." /////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Philip Kindred Dick (December 16, 1928 March 2, 1982), often referred to by his initials PKD, was an American science fiction writer and novelist. He wrote 44 novels and about 121 short stories, most of which appeared in science fiction magazines during his lifetime. His fiction explored varied philosophical and social questions such as the nature of reality, perception, human nature, and identity, and commonly featured characters struggling against elements such as alternate realities, illusory environments, monopolistic corporations, drug abuse, authoritarian governments, and altered states of consciousness. He is considered one of the most important figures in 20th-century science fiction. ///// . . . He began publishing science fiction stories in 1952, at age 23. He found little commercial success until his alternative history novel The Man in the High Castle (1962) earned him acclaim, including a Hugo Award for Best Novel, when he was 33. He followed with science fiction novels such as Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (1968) and Ubik (1969). His 1974 novel Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said won the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. ********** The above text was taken from, respctively, Vintage Books (via Google Books) and Wikipedia.

First edition of Philip K. Dick's first novel published in hardcover format. Octavo, original cloth. Boldly signed by Philip K. Dick on the front free endpaper. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with light rubbing and a few small closed tears. Jacket design by Arthur Hawkins. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box made by the Harcourt Bindery. Rare and desirable signed. One of Dick's earliest novels, Time Out of Joint, epitomizes the common theme concerning the nature of reality that informs Dick's overall body of work. The title references the line uttered by Hamlet to Horatio after being visited by his father's ghost and learning that his uncle Claudius murdered his father; in short, a shocking supernatural event that fundamentally alters the way Hamlet perceives the state and the universe. The story centres on Ragle Gumm and his discovery that that the idyllic town in which he lives is actually a constructed reality designed to protect him from the frightening fact that he lives on a then-future Earth.
