Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good dj. Illustrated by (dj design) Edward Meshekoff (illustrator). First American Edition. [light wear to book's extremities, a little age-toning to edges of text block; jacket chipped at top of spine and at lower left corner of front panel, with light staining and a bit of edgewear]. The first book by this British writer, about the intense friendship between two very different women, one of whom is thrust into a deep and devastating introspection after the other meets a violent death. Per the jacket blurb, the author had had a somewhat unsettled childhood, but had wanted to be a writer since the age of twelve, and had "consigned a number of tentative books and plays to the dust-bin" before completing this one (which was first published in England under the title "Honey Out of the Rock"). She proceeded to make up for lost time, following up this novel with three more in just a few years -- after which she then apparently just stopped writing (or at least publishing). Maybe she burned out, or maybe -- given that she already had three children with her husband, novelist/journalist/poet Hubert Nicholson -- her subsequent literary silence was due to nothing more complicated than a decision, or a need, to devote more time to her family. (Interesting to note that when Mr. Nicholson died in 1996, she was referred to as "novelist Barbara Collard" in at least one obituary, but it wasn't even made plain whether or not she had survived him.).

Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 165 pages. Published in 2018. The actor/author's debut novel. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly copies that are signed on a bookplate. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that remains available in multiple subsequent printings, a testament to the respect and admiration Sean Penn commands in mainstream American culture as one of its most serious and artistically ambitious artists. The First Edition is now scarce. "Signed By The Author" white sticker pasted in front. Presents Sean Penn's "Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff". His allegorical novel about present-day America, its amoral weirdness, and its existential discontents. "A scorching, darkly funny novel about Bob Honey, a modern American man, entrepreneur, and part-time assassin. Bob Honey has a hard time connecting with other people. He's tired of being marketed to every moment, sick of a world where even an orgasm isn't real until it is turned into a tweet. A paragon of old-fashioned American entrepreneurship, Bob sells septic tanks to Jehovah's Witnesses and arranges pyrotechnic displays for foreign dictators. He's also a contract killer for an off-the-books program run by a branch of US intelligence that targets the elderly, the infirm, and others who drain our consumption-driven society of its resources" (Publisher's blurb). He just does stuff. "It seems wrong to say that so dystopian a novel is great fun to read, but it's true. I suspect that Thomas Pynchon and Hunter S. Thompson would love this book" (Salman Rushdie). An absolute "must-have" title for Sean Penn collectors. This Autographed Copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the half-title page by Sean Penn. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or the bookplate that the publisher flooded the market with in order to quench public demand. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws (because they were read) or are in multiple subsequent printings. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. One of the most brilliant American writer/artist/film actors of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO ETHAN HAWKE TITLE IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 1501189042. Signed by Author.

Food crops are rapidly disappearing. A chef escapes her dying career in a dreary city to take a job at a decadent mountaintop colony seemingly free of the world's troubles. There, the sky is clear again. Rare ingredients abound. Her enigmatic employer and his visionary daughter have built a lush new life for the global elite, one that reawakens the chef to the pleasures of taste, touch, and her own body. In this atmosphere of hidden wonders and cool, seductive violence, the chef's boundaries undergo a thrilling erosion. Soon she is pushed to the center of a startling attempt to reshape the world far beyond the plate. Sensuous and surprising, joyous and bitingly sharp, told in language as alluring as it is original, Land of Milk and Honey lays provocatively bare the ethics of seeking pleasure in a dying world. It is a daringly imaginative exploration of desire and deception, privilege and faith, and the roles we play to survive.
