New York. William Morrow and Company. 1941. Octavo (8 x 6). 260 pp. Limited Edition. Book number 103 of 475 copies offered for sale. Signed by Roderick Haig-Brown and the book's illustrator, Charles De Feo, on the limitation page. Illustrated color frontispiece. With sixteen exquisitely drawn plates of salmon and anglers by Charles De Feo. Return to the River is the finest account published on the life history Pacific salmon. Laid-in the book are the book's designer Fritz Lund's images of Return to the River's title page, variations of contents' pages, and his penciled notes regarding placement of images, running heads or titles, spacial placements of letters, font size, etc. including their design and placement; printed on parchment paper are "Chapter One" within rules and the letter "T." Mr. Lund was a freelance book designer and was employed by William Morrow to design the text sheets of this limited edition. The book is bound in quarter red morocco with gilt titles, a salmon in gold, and gray cloth. Top edge gilt. With the original gray paper over boards slip case. The book is near fine, with the always present discoloration from the binder's glue on the paste downs. The slip case is very good with a light rubbing to the extremities. The laid-in material is in fine condition, too. Signed by Author and Illustrator.
