no binding. Zustand: very good. One of the most important historical transportation routes in Japan. It connected the two major cities of Kyoto and Edo (present-day Tokyo) during the Edo period (1603-1868). The Tokaido Highway stretched approximately 500 kilometers along the eastern coast of Honshu, the main island of Japan. The Tokaido Highway was not only a crucial trade route but also served as a vital cultural and social artery during the Edo period. It was heavily traveled by samurai, merchants, pilgrims, and commoners, allowing for the exchange of goods, ideas, and cultural influences between the two major cities. The Tokaido Highway was divided into 53 stations or post towns, where travelers could rest, eat, and find accommodations. Each post town had its own unique character and offered various services to cater to the needs of travelers. The popularity and significance of the Tokaido Highway are depicted in the famous woodblock print series "The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido" by artist Utagawa Hiroshige. The series captures the landscapes, scenes, and people encountered along the journey. Intext print with text on the back. Image Size: 5 1/2 x 5 ins. Overall Size including text and borders : 10 1/2 x 7 Ins . CONDITION: Clear and sharp with beautiful detail. As scanned. This beautiful print would look great matted and framed. Or an art supply store can provide you with a selection of frames for old art treasures. NOTE THE FOLLOWING BEFORE YOU PURCHASE: This is a GENUINE ANTIQUE VINTAGE 1880s PRINT. It is NOT a modern reproduction, ie. a laser scan, photocopy etc. It is the original from the antique or vintage atlas or book publication. This print was published on the date mentioned, or circa of the date mentioned at the top of the page. The print I have for sale, like many antique vintage prints and maps that you see online, originate from an antique vintage book or atlas publication. The publication may not always be known. If you have any questions, emails are welcome.

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. [353]-377 p. : ill., maps ; 26 cm. Cover title. "Reprinted from the Geographical review, vol. XXVII, no. 3, July 1937." "The T¿kaid¿ (¿¿¿ East Sea Road?) was the most important of the Five Routes of the Edo period, connecting Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto in Japan. Unlike the inland and less heavily travelled Nakasend¿, the T¿kaid¿ travelled along the sea coast of eastern Honsh¿, hence the route's name." This very rare booklet features an inscription by Japaneses scholar Hall to "Shannon McCune" on the front cover. The booklet provides photographs and maps of the area. The front cover is a bit toned and has two very small holes, otherwise a very good copy. Signed by Author(s).
