Buch Erstausgabe
First edition, first impression; 8vo; publisher's blue cloth, titles to spine gilt, with the printed dust jacket; an exceptional copy; viii, 209pp. stock23 A spectacular copy in collector's condition of the first of Keynes's major contributions to economic theory. A significant text in which, for instance, he dismisses the gold standard out of hand as 'a barbarous relic'. The theorising here would lead directly to the wider exposition of The General Theory and may be seen as its prolegomenon. It is also the source of his notorious statement, 'In the long run we are all dead'. Copies in cloth are not uncommon but examples such as in this in jacket and in collector's condition are genuinely rare.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition; 8vo; original boards and dust jacket. Keynes states the need for stable currency as the indispensable foundation to a healthy world economy. Keynes begins by laying out data showing the serious fluctuations in the value of money that began in 1914 and subjected North America, Europe, and India to injurious cycles of inflation and deflation. He describes the various effects of this erratic underlying influence and makes it clear that policies limiting such fluctuations should be implemented to ensure economic and social stability. In the final analysis he recommends the implementation of policies by Great Britain and the United States that aim at achieving stability of the commodity value of the dollar rather than the gold value. "[T]he ideal state of affairs," he argues, "is an intimate co-operation between the Federal Reserve Board and the Bank of England, as a result of which stability of prices and of exchange would be achieved at the same time." A fine copy in a very good dust jacket, which is a little toned to the spine and slightly frayed at upper edges.

Erstausgabe
First edition of this important treatise, which is devoted to the need for stable currency as the indispensable foundation to a healthy world economy. Octavo, original blue cloth with gilt titles to the spine. In near fine condition with light shelfwear. A very sharp example. "To those who wish to seek early indications of the theories that were later to appear in the General Theory, the Tract is the most rewarding source. In it will be found, above all, the clearest possible demonstration of Keynes s abiding interest in the objective of stabilizing the level of business activity" (Roll, A History of Economic Thought).

First edition, first impression, of Keynes's influential examination of currency and economic stability. The work developed from a series of articles published in 1922 in the Manchester Guardian Commercial. The Tract contains "some novel ideas, such as estimating the value as 'an inflation tax' of the levy exacted on all other holders of cash by a government inflating the currency, or the theory of interest parity in the market for forward exchange. The proposals he put forward were certainly novel. Keynes developed the case for a managed currency in place of the gold standard, which he dismissed as 'a barbarous relic'" (ODNB). These proposals exerted a surprising influence on the nascent monetary economists of the 1960s and 70s - in spite of their broader opposition to Keynesian macroeconomics. Mattioli 1845; Moggridge A 5.1. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, covers ruled in blind. Tables in the text, leaf of publisher's advertisements at rear. Light rubbing, faint toning to spine, minor foxing to endpapers and edges: a very good copy.

Like all that Mr. Keynes writes, it is full of matter, and also full of wit. If any argument were wanted to show that, whether we like it or not, we must tackle the monetary problem, it is to be found in Mr. Keynes book. It is a bright light, and though it may, if misused, do harm to the eyesight of some people, it throws a light, and a true light, on the world's dilemma.' - The Spectator (Review quote taken from the front panel of the dustwrapper) ***A fourth printing of the true first edition of John Maynard Keynes' "A Tract on Monetary Reform", complete in the original printed dustwrapper, in nice, collectable condition. Copies of Maynard Keynes' works from this period are extremely hard to find now complete in their dustwrappers. First edition. 8vo. viii, 209, [3] pp. Original blue cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, ruling continued to boards in blind (extremities ever so slightly rubbed, small mark to rear board, some rather unfortunate pencilled highlighting and annotations throughout, otherwise a very good copy). Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A very presentable clean copy bound in blue cloth boards which have clear gilt title lettering on the spine. Gilt bordering to the top and bottom edges on the spine and blind bordering on the front and back boards. The spine ends are a tad worn and rubbed and the corner tips are knocked and also a little worn. None of this is all that noticeable but mentioned in the interests of clarity and fairness. Internally the pages are clean throughout, albeit somewhat browned/toned to the prelims and the page block edge. There is a previous owner name inscription on the front fly leaf of one D. Barber, dated June 1924, which has later been lightly crossed through. A wonderful copy of a rather scarce first impression.
