Les neuf premiers chapitres traitent des notions fondamentales de la géométrie euclidienne et le dernier, intitulé "Pratique sur le terrain" aborde la levée de plan, la mesure d'objets inaccessible (comme la largeur d'une rivière ou l'angle d'un fossé plein d'eau). Il est orné de vignettes plus élaborées représentant les propositions qui le composent. Sébastien Leclerc a publié un premier traité intitulé Pratique de la géométrie en 1669 dans un petit format mais souhaitait en faire un plus complet et étendu en rédigeant celui-ci. Sébastien Leclerc, ou Le Clerc (1637-1714), fut tour à tour, ingénieur-géographe, membre de l'Académie Royale de peinture, graveur du Cabinet de Louis XIV et professeur à l'École des Gobelins. Ses recherches sur la perspective et la géométrie le conduiront à enseigner ces matières à l'Académie royale, entre 1680 et 1699. Enfin, une nouvelle vignette par Cochin, a été placée en tête de la Vie de l'auteur. L'édition est célèbre pour ses planches de géométrie repliées, agrémentées de scènes pittoresques où promeneurs galants, putti joueurs, vendeurs ambulants, paysans attablés et conduisant leurs bêtes ou encore jeunes gens jouant de la musique sont placés dans de gracieux environnements de villes, de campagnes ou de ruines romantiques.
