Later Hardback Recasing. Zustand: Very Good - See Description. First Edition. 1865. First edition - two volumes. Volume 1 contains xvi, 360pp., a folding map as a frontispiece, 12 plates and 9 woodcuts within the text. Volume 2 contains xvi, 275pp., a folding map as a frontispiece, 23 plates and 29 woodcuts. Sir Charles Thomas Newton (1816-1894) was a noted British archaeologist. In 1840, contrary to the wishes of his family, he entered the British Museum as assistant in the department of antiquities, and in 1852 he was named vice-consul at Mytilene. From April 1853 to January 1854 he was consul at Rhodes, with the definite duty, among others, of watching over the interests of the British Museum in the Levant. In 1854 and 1855 he carried on excavations in Kalymnos, and in the following year he was at length enabled to undertake his long-cherished scheme of identifying the site, and recovering for this country the chief remains, of the mausoleum at Halicarnassus. In 1856-1857, he achieved the great archaeological exploit of his life by the discovery of the remains of the mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. He described the result in his 'History of Discoveries at Halicarnassus ' (1862-1863), written in conjunction with R. P. Pullan, and in his 'Travels and Discoveries in the Levant', in which he records the researches and his observations during his residence in the Levant of seven years, from 1852 to 1859. This work is more of a popular account of his discoveries, abrdiged from his larger "History of Discoveries at Halicarnassus, Cnidus, and Branchidae". The series of letters in which the work is arranged, were for the most part written in the Levant. The two volumes have been professionally rebacked and sympathetically rebound in new uncovered boards with a grey paper spine and paper title labels. This recasing probably took place near the end of the 20th century. The cases of books are in very good condition. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks and a little soiling from finger smudges, etc., on the first few pages, including the title pages and frontispiiece maps. There is also some light foxing on the maps and a few other plates. The frontispiece map in volume 2 also has some repaired tear and an unrepaired tear of about 2" on the bottom edge of one of the folds. This volume also has a tear of about 3/4" on the fore edge of the title page; a water stain around the top corner of the plate facing page 94; a repaired tear of about 2" on the top spine corner of the plate facing page 128; and two repaired tears of up to about 2 1/2" on the spine edge of the plate facing page 140. There may be a few other minor faults that have been missed, but overall these are very good tight and clean copies of a scarce work. PLEASE NOTE: Heavy books so extra will be needed for shipping to non-UK customers.

Volume I: xiv, [2], 360 pp., frontispiece folding map of Rhodes, 16 plates including a folding map of Mytiline & a folding plan of Rhodes, 8 woodcuts, / Volume II: xiv, [2], 275 pp., frontispiece folding map of Caria, 23 plates including a folding plan of Mausoleum site, 23 wood cuts, half-titles, contemporary full calf, lightly rubbed, title gilt on raised decorated spine, marbled endpaper & edges, previous owner's inscription on front fly leaf of volume 1, light occasional foxing mainly to end leaves, otherwise set in very good condition. Sir Charles Thomas Newton 1816-1894 was a British archæologist. This very interesting work describes Newton?s activities in the levant from 1852 to 1859. The text is in the form of letters and begins with Newton?s appointment as vice-consul at Mitylene in February 1852. There are long notices on Mitylene, his life there, the local residents, and the archaeological sites. Newton also spent several months at Rhodes as acting consul (April 1852 to January 1853) and in 1854-5 he carried out excavations at Kalymnos. In 1856 he began the series of expeditions to the coast of Asia Minor which resulted in the excavations of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. Volume 2 of the Travels contains a popular account of his discoveries at Halicarnassus. The plates include views in Rhodes, Cos, Kalymnos and Mitylene, as well as illustrations of the sculptures from the Mausoleum (lithographs, etchings and photolithographs after photographs by F. Bedford, D. Colnaghi and A. Berg, possibly Albert Berg author of Die Insel Rhodus. The appendix to volume 1 contains D. E. Colnaghi?s account of his tours in Lycia and Mitylene in 1854.
