Preface by Simone de Beauvoir. Translated from the French by Helen Weaver. New York: Meridian Book, 1994, later printing number line ending in 7, xxiv, 415pp., . "The inspiring true story of the 600 Jews who revolted against their captors and burned a Nazi death camp to the ground. Nearly a million Jews were consumed by the ovens of Treblinka before August 2, 1943. On that day 600 prisoners armed with stolen guns and grenades attacked the Nazi guards, burned the camp, and fled into the nearby Polish forests. Of these, forty survived to bear witness to man's courage in the face of the greatest evil human history has produced.". 9780452011243 ISBN 0452011248.

Its author, Jean~Francois Steiner, was only 28. Like many young Jews of his generation, he had lost much of his family, including his father, to the Nazi death camps. And also like them, he was obsessed with the question many have asked: why didn't the Jews in the camps revolt? Why did they go to their deaths obediently, quietly? Today the answer seems clear: the Nazis' thoroughness, organization, and ruthlessness made resistance virtually impossible. But in the mid~60s, the search for answers brought Steiner to the history of Treblinka, the first camp built by the Nazis that was not converted from labor camp to death camp but built explicitly for murder. He examined testimony from the Polish Court of Inquiry in 1945 and the Yad Vashem Institute in Israel, then personally interviewed as many of the forty survivors of Treblinka as he could. What he learned was that in August, 1943, after more than 700,000 men, women and children had been slaughtered in Treblinka, the one thousand remaining prisoners did revolt. Many were killed in the fighting, but six hundred escaped to the woods surrounding the camp. Though all but forty were killed during the following year, the Nazis considered the revolt an inexplicable defeat. The book that emerged from Steiner's research is a unique blend of history and novel, told in a deliberately detached, calm, matter~of~fact style. Some attacked it for manipulating facts, inventing conversations and internal monologues, and generally using fictional techniques to dramatize historical events. Some saw objectionable stereotypes in Steiner's generalizations about Jews. And some complained that he tries to turn a tragedy of destruction and evil into a reassuring tale of courage triumphant. But others, deeply moved by the book's undeniable emotional force, hailed it as a passionate, powerful work of art that artfully combines the impact of documentary, philosophy, and fiction. In her preface, Simone de Beauvoir anticipated the criticisms and answered, saying: " [Steiner's] courage will undoubtedly cause him to be accused of anti~semitism . And yet he was right to have confidence in the truth, for he has won. The story of Treblinka . of the hours when the insurrection broke out and raged . [shows that] fatalistic resignation could never have been imputed to the Jews . Steiner has tried to understand and to make us understand. He has fully achieved his purpose.".

In den Warenkorb1st edition. Very good copy in the original gilt-blocked cloth. Spine bands and panel edges somewhat dulled and rubbed as with age. Remains quite well-preserved overall. Physical description: xiii, 336 pages; 23 cm. Notes: First published in French as La Ve érite é sur Treblinka: Paris, Fayard, 1966. Contents: Jean-Francois Steiner's book is a terrifying and moving reconstruction of the extraordinary revolt of Jewish prisoners in the notorious Nazi death camp at Treblinka - a singular example of Jewish resistance in the midst of Nazi genocide. Treblinka, in Poland, was one of the camps specially designed by the Nazi 'death technicians' for the mass extermination of Jews. Between July 1942 and July 1943 some 800,000 Jews died in its gas chambers. But on 2 August 1943, one year after the inauguration of the camp, a courageous group of Jewish prisoners, at the cost of terrible renunciation and sacrifice, turned on their executioners, killed them, burned the camp and escaped. Of the 600 who escaped the flaming ruins of Treblinka, only forty were still alive at the end of the war. Jean-Francois Steiner tracked down these survivors to piece together the story of Treblinka and its revolt. By showing how Treblinka did revolt, it makes the world understand for the first time how it was possible that Auschwitz, Belsen, Dachau did not. Subjects: Treblinka (Concentration camp). World War, 1939-1945 Atrocities. World War, 1939-1945 Prisoners and prisons, German.Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) Poland. Nazi concentration camps Poland. Jewish Resistance Movements. 1 Kg.
