Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 335 pages. Published in 1972. Omnibus collection of novellas. One of the most important literary collections of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. There is no ISBN. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Carlos Fuentes', Jose Donoso's, and Severo Sarduy's "Triple Cross: Holy Place, Hell Has No Limits, From Cuba With A Song" in felicitous English translations. Marks the three great Latin-American novellas' first appearance in published form. More important, "From Cuba With A Song" also marks the very first appearance in English of the brilliant Cuban poet and novelist Severo Sarduy in English, and remains his single most celebrated work in the Spanish original and in translation. Both Fuentes and Donoso are well-known to readers in English. Their novellas, "Holy Place" and "Hell Has No Limits", are now widely regarded as Modernist classics. To this day, however - and after his untimely demise (from AIDS) - Sarduy is not. So the publisher provides helpful information about him: "Born in Cuba, Sarduy studied at the University of Havana and was one of the few writers involved in the fight against Batista. In 1960, he left for Paris, where he became the editor of the Latin-American Collection of 'Editions du Seuil'. Among the books he introduced to the French were Gabriel Garcia Marquez's 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' and Jose Lezama Lima's 'Paradiso'. 'De Donde son los cantantes' ('From Cuba With A Song') was Sarduy's first experimental work. Divided into three sections, each corresponding to the ethnic groups that make up Cuban nationality (Spanish, African, and Chinese), the novella explores the disparate elements at work in Latin-American culture. For Sarduy, culture is a series of radical and often violent displacements and errors" (Publisher's blurb). "The characters are made-up for a carnival that will let loose their deepest fantasies. Exposes the complicity between the novel's conventions and society's patriarchal structure. Denounces the quest for Latin-American identity as yet another ideological maneuver by writers who wish to strengthen the hold of authority" (Gonzalez Echevarria). An absolute "must-have" title for Carlos Fuentes, Jose Donoso, and Severo Sarduy collectors. This title is a great collection. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (American) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. Three of the greatest Latin-American writers of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER CARLOS FUENTES TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). no.
