12mo, pp. [iv], 183; a clean copy, rebound in library cloth. First edition of this translation. This is the first publication by Robert Goadby (1720-78), who was almost certainly educated at Repton school the book is dedicated to his masters there, and to the governors (who include the Earl of Chesterfield). Despite his youth, in 1741 Goadby was already established as a bookseller at Bath, and he later became quite a figure in the book trade in the west of England, having a shop at Sherborne and being the publisher of the Sherborne Mercury. He was also probably the author of a well-known and much-reprinted work, Apology for the Life of Mr Bampfylde Moore Carew, first printed in 1745. Provenance. Lincoln's Inn Library (binding), with deaccession stamp on endpaper.
