Hardcover. Zustand: VG-. Mahlon Blaine (illustrator). 1st Edition. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, beige cloth boards show foxing spots, mainly along edges and spine. The internal binding is good and text pages are tight. No hinge issues, no bookplates, no library markings. The front end page has the original owner's name and date and there is also an old price that was written in the corner in pencil, and then partially erased. The last free end page also has a set of initials penned in the corner. No other handwriting found. Pages show light toning and there is some foxing present, though this is mainly limited to the end pages and pastedowns.

First Edition Thus. 303 pp, color frontis and b/w illustrations, the book and contents are clean and solid, three pages have a small tear mended with acid-free document tape, the pages are lightly browned, the covers are tight and have light soil and the lower 2 corners are lightly bumped, the dust jacket has some edge wear, mostly on the corners and top and bottom of the spine and light soil.

First published in Paris in 1843 (the year before the author's death), this was the French writer and pamphleteer's best known novel. It has been issued in three major translations into English: the Benjamin R. Tucker edition of 1890, the Boni & Liveright edition of 1917, and this one, translated by Marie Lorenz with illustrations by Mahlon Blaine. The humorous and satirical story concerns the misadventures of a country doctor in the time of Louis XV. The book has lovely cloth covered boards, a stained top edge, untrimmed foredges, and is nicely printed. Edges and endpapers are very slightly browned, but a very good copy indeed in very good, somewhat rubbed dust jacket with tape to inside and outside surfaces strengthening nicks and chips to the edges.
