In den WarenkorbFirst edition of the author's masterpiece. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Malcolm Lowry on the half-title page. Near fine in a very good dust jacket with some rubbing and wear. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box made by the Harcourt Bindery. First editions are rare signed. Under the Volcano tells the story of Geoffrey Firmin, an alcoholic British consul in the small Mexican town of Quauhnahuac, on the Day of the Dead, 2 November 1938. The book takes its name from the two volcanoes that overshadow Quauhnahuac and the characters, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl. It was named by Modern Library as one of the 100 Greatest Novels of the Twentieth Century. It is the basis for the 1984 film directed by John Huston written by Guy Gallo starring Albert Finney, Jacqueline Bisset, Anthony Andrews and Katy Jurado. It received Academy Award nominations for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Albert Finney) and Best Music, Original Score (Alex North).

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first impression, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To my sister Priscilla with devotion from her brother Malcolm". A former silent screen star, Priscilla Bonner (1899-1996) was not Lowry's sister by birth, but the elder sister of Lowry's wife, Margerie, the dedicatee of the book and widely credited with shaping its final form. This first edition was published on 19 February 1947, preceding the Jonathan Cape edition which was published on 1 September (Woolmer): it "was poorly received in Britain and soon remaindered, but was hailed as a work of genius in North America, becoming a best-seller" (ODNB). This copy has the later issue jacket, with "Critical Acclaim For A Great Novel" instead of "Advance Critical Acclaim" (the point for the first issue). Woolmer A2. Octavo. Original grey cloth, spine and front cover lettered in red. With the dust jacket. Housed in a custom black cloth folding case. Fresh, a little toning to spine and board edges, minor paper flaw to fore-margin of pp. 33-86 with associated creasing; price-clipped jacket with minor chips to spine ends and a few nicks to extremities; a fine copy in the near-fine jacket.
