In 1812 the king of the Comoro Islands requested assistance from the governor of the Cape of Good Hope against the predatory expeditions of the inhabitants of Madagascar. This voyage took place in direct consequence of his plea. The folding frontispiece map is soiled and chipped around the edges, edges all uncut, a very nice copy of the first edition in recent morocco backed binding. Collated, complete.Comprising dated diary entries of Prior's experiences and findings, in which he describes the customs, people, flora and fauna of each area he visited. There are detailed descriptions and assessments of the lifestyle and architecture.This particular work follows Prior's travels along the East Coast of Africa to Mozambique, Johanna, and Quiloa to St Helena then on to Rio de Janeiro, Bahia and Pernambuco.With errata to the verso of page 'v'.A lovely copy of this early nineteenth century travelogue. Rebound, in a quarter calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Endpapers renewed. Externally, fine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, with the odd area of spotting, most concentrated to plates and first and last few leaves. Very Good Indeed. book.

This volume unites the narratives by a young surgeon in the Royal Navy on board the Nisus, which undertook two impressive journeys during the Napoleonic Wars. The nature of these expeditions was a mix of exploration, commerce and colonialism. The East Coast of Africa, under Portuguese and Arab control had been rather neclected by the British up to that time and, Brazil rarely visited. 'The author describes Rio â ¦ He comments on the English commerce in Rio. He describes Salvador, the ill-smelling lower city and the high city with the cathedral, theatre, library with its 5,000 volumes â ¦ He obsxerves and comments on the manners and customs, the women, dress, architecture, slave trade, jewelry industry. Prior arrived in Pernambuco, describes the city, new bridge, cotton trade .' (Borba de Moraes p. 689).
