An extensive (14 page) and useful table of contents since the organization of the book is unusual. For instance the discussion of Wilkes ends 6 page into the 15 page Chapter XI. This copy is fine for reading and allows its reader to see exactly what the interested but impecunious person could have in the early Victorian period.

Contemporary muted purple cloth with no exterior library markings; some rubbing and small stains to boards with worn/bumped corners; spine cloth sunned with a few stains as well as chipped head and shallow wear/fraying at heel; spine's gilt stamped lettering and vignette remains fairly bright. Toning and stains to text block edges. Yellow endpapers; remnant of peeled Giles College bookplate (long defunct college in Giles County, Tennessee which operated from the 1850s to 1886 save for closing during the Civil War years - no other institutional marks present) on front pastedown along with old ink ownership inscription of a Wales, Tenn. resident; some foxing and toning but interior leaves overall remain quite clean. Binding is firm. Still an attractive copy. With pictorial title leaf followed by text title leaf (latter has imprint "Auburn and Rochester: Alden and Beardsley. New York: J.C. Derby, 119 Nassau Street, 1855." whereas spine heel has "Alden, Beardsley & Co. Auburn." Collates as complete but the "numerous illustrations" claimed within the title amount to the aforementioned toned pictorial title leaf and pages 321, 433, and toned 460. Text divided into "PART I. EXPEDITIONS IN THE PACIFIC AND THE SOUTH SEAS" (pages 23-458) and "PART II. EXPEDITION TO THE DEAD SEA AND THE RIVER JORDAN" (pages 460-517). The book obviously owes much to NARRATIVE OF THE UNITED STATES EXPLORING EXPEDITION. DURING THE YEARS 1838, 1839, 1840, 1841, 1842 by Charles Wilkes and NARRATIVE OF THE EXPEDITION TO THE RIVER JORDAN AND THE DEAD SEA by William F. Lynch but, as author John S. Jenkins states in his Preface, his efforts are not "an abridgement of the published narratives of Messrs. Wilkes and Lynch . . . [but] will be found to contain a very large proportion of facts not embraced in either of them."
