This copy is fine for reading and allows its reader to see exactly what the interested but impecunious person could have in the early Victorian period.

Leather is untreated, scuffed and soiled with edges and corners worn. The worst issue is the entire spine area has been covered in clear tape (excluding label area) which appears…to have been done to reinforce the hinges. The internal binding of the text portion of the book is good but there are areas at the front and rear end pages were pulling has caused separation and showing the binders string. Pages are toned due to age and there is foxing present with the worst being the end pages and pastedowns along with the title page. The only handwriting found in book is on the second end page where it is very lightly penciled "From library of M. M. Van Dycke". The clear tape on the book exterior is the only reason for the poor grade in the interior binding grades as VG to VG+. The 8 plates and sketched map have been verified as being present.

The United States Exploring Expedition was a surveying an…d exploring expedition of the Pacific Ocean (the Southern Seas) conducted by the United States Navy from 1838-1842. The voyage was authorized by Congress in 1836. It is also known under "the Wilkes Expedition" in honor of its second appointed commander, U.S. Navy Lt. Charles Wilkes (1798-1877). This expedition was of major importance to the growth of science in The United States. Illustrated with full-page engravings and some drawings. In two parts: 1) Expeditions in the Pacific and the South Seas. 2) Expedition to the Dead Sea and the River Jordan. 10 page publisher's advertisement section in rear of book. Age wear, with some water staining and chipping on binding. Parts of joints split but holding. Head of spine chipped. Moderate foxing throughout, some images slightly affected, text clean. Binding in fair, interior in good to good+ condition. Good reading copy.
