Paperback. Zustand: New. Composed around 1250 by an unknown author in the region of Orléans, the Vulgate Commentary on Ovid's Metamorphoses is the most widely disseminated and reproduced medieval work on Ovid's epic compendium of classical mythology and materialist philosophy. This commentary both preserves the rich store of twelfth-century glossing on the Metamorphoses and incorporates new material of literary interest, while the marginal glosses in many respects reflect the scholar interests of an early thirteenth-century schoolmaster. To date, eighteen complete or fragmentary manuscripts of the text have been identified which document the circulation and dissemination of the text during the later thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. A recently discovered partially preserved text of the commentary written into the margins of an incunabulum of the Metamorphoses in the British Library now demonstrates that the commentary was still being read as late as 1475 and that humanistic readers of the poem considered it significant enough to copy into their printed editions.
