Smith Jacket Photograph By John Benedict. keywords: Poetry America . FROM THE PUBLISHER - Here is a new collection of poems by a writer whom the poet Carolyn Kizer calls one of the most passionate, energetic, and honest poets living.' Hugo's most important subject is the American West; as William Stafford said of The Lady in Kicking Horse Reservoir, A part of the West belongs to Hugo. By telling over and over again its places and people he reclaims it from the very bleakness he confronts; and it all begins to loom as a great intense abode that we can't neglect, that we can't bear to let go.' In the present volume, people, places, dreams, memories are explored again-always in search of the poet's self. Here is Hugo describing his own work: For years I thought a poet required some profound literary reason to write. Since I didn't have one, I assumed I was a private poet, a hermetic with need but no meaningful purpose. Thanks to reviewers and critics, and I owe them much, I now believe my poems demonstrate a conviction that my life is important just by virtue of being a life and being mine. And by extension, for the same reason, your life is important, too. For a long time I couldn't believe in the importance of my affections even as they were showing in my poems, even as the poems themselves hinted at, in lucky moments revealed, the necessity of self-acceptance. Today I think what we love well remains because our love keeps it alive.' Mr. Hugo taught creative writing at the University of Colorado; he also taught at Montana, Iowa, and Washington. inventory #4792 Very Good in Dustjacket With Tear on Front Cover.
