Good copy but fair wrappers From the Preface: "Conflicts between men and bears have prehistoric roots and these conflicts continue today for various reasons. The bear once promised meat and oil, a robe for the bed, a bragging trophy, and the thrill of taking a large and possibly dangerous animal. Killing bears became the badge of the superior hunter and the mark of the good citizen. Where people built their homes, farms, and villages, there was no long room for bears. Fur trappers coming out of Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee, bound for the beaver waters of the Rocky Mountains, met the grizzly head on. Sometimes the great bear won, but in the long haul, the grizzly, like his smaller black cousins, was in deep trouble. Mountain man James Ohio Pattie, speaking of the grizzlies encountered during his fur trapping career, said the bears not need for food were killed anyhow, 'to mend their manners.' This attitude was typical. Wherever people and bears have shared this world there has been a special relationship between them. No other animal affects us in quite the same ways. The bears have challenged our dominance, and earned our fear and affection. As long as the bears, both black and grizzly, were abundant on this continent, we attack them with every method we could devise. Only when their numbers are finally reduced to low levels do we relent and begin searching for ways to save them. Our feeling toward bears reflects our possessive attitude toward all the natural resources around us. We see whatever is here the bear included as belonging to us, and therefore being ours to use or dispose of as we choose. "Nature.
