Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - In 'Wild Beasts and Their Ways,' Sir Samuel W. Baker delves into the evolution of rifles over the past half-century, focusing on their application in both military and hunting contexts. The text begins by describing the limitations of early rifles, which were cumbersome and required a mallet for loading due to their spherical bullets. Baker highlights the shift to more efficient designs, such as the Express rifle, which emphasized high velocity and accuracy through the use of larger powder charges. He recounts his own experiments with rifles, advocating for the use of solid bullets over hollow ones, especially when hunting dangerous game. Baker argues that solid bullets retain their integrity and deliver more effective stopping power, whereas hollow bullets tend to fragment during the change of state, which can be less reliable in critical situations. The text also touches on the differences between African and Asian elephants, noting their distinct physical characteristics and behaviors. Baker emphasizes the importance of selecting the right rifle and ammunition based on the type of game and the environment, cautioning against a one-size-fits-all approach. He concludes by reflecting on the advancements in rifle technology and their implications for both sport and military use, underscoring the need for careful training and consideration of the specific requirements of each hunting or combat scenario.…
