Zustand: Good copy. [16]-200, 78-[2], [1]-140 (=138)-[11] ff. 3 major works of the Florentine political philosopher Machiavelli (1469-1527) with an uncommon Italian imprint, but in reality published in (protestant) Elizabethan London. The 3rd work ("I sette libri"), dealing with military art and science, is extremely rare (STC records copies in Oxford, Edinburgh, Reading, Washington and Harvard only). It was a special issue destined for the Frankfurt Book Fair, with a cancel bifolium A 1,8 (H. Seller in "The Library", 1925, p. 112). The present copy presents 2 variant states : on A8r l. 3 from bottom reads "no(n) venga" instead of "non ve(n)ga" - as in the Harvard copy; a "settima figura" called for on S4r has not been printed (blank T2v). Curious ills of army position at end of III. Woodcut marks on 2 first titles. All 3 printed in italics. Ref. 1. STC 17159. Gerber, Machiavelli II 85-87. Lenger, Machiavel 14. Adams M-18. Later blindstamped calf (sl. rubbed), gilt spine on 4 raised bands, (usual browning and spotting, occ. marg. dampstaining, edges of 1st ff. frayed, old repair to marg. tear in *6 of I; blank pc. of fore-edge margin of T4 of III torn off).

The English landscape painter Andrew MacCallum ( 1821 - 1902 ) conceived this publication in memory of his deceased wife Susan Irlam whom had died in Antibes ( Southern France ) on the 24th of December 1875. The first photograph in the album is a portrait of his wife. The album consists of 28 large original photographs of his paintings, mounted on thick album leaves, with a printed caption underneath. The landscapes were made in Venice, Berchtensgraden, Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa , Rome, Fontainbleau. Provenance. From the library of Robert Hoe (1839 - 1909), with a manuscript ex-dono from the artist and Hoe's ex-lbris. The library of Robert Hoe, first president of the Grolier Club, was auctioned in 1911-1912. Nearly half of the books were bought by Henry Huntingdon. Obviously a very rare publication. OCLC lists only one copy ( Mills College - Olin Library in Oakland CA. ).

Very soon the advance of photography and reproduction printing techniques made it possible to supply the market with cheaper and more authentic views. but alass the noble art of etching suffered from it.

15. London, printed at the Bedford Press, 1900, large in-4°, 37 x 27 cm, xviii pp + (2)(halftitle) + 360 pp + 178 full-page illustrations and plans (some folding) + approx. 1000 illustrations in the text (the plate and text illustrations with a continuous numbering). Bound in a contemporary half leather binding, with green cloth covered boards, raised gilt spine, top edge gilt. Leather slightly discoloured and with some minor wear. A fine copy. An impressive and exhaustive study on the French industrial conglomerate firm Schneider et Companie. It is particularly well illustrated and thus should no have failed to raise the interest of the British and German competitors. At the turn of the century Schneider was the leading French artillery constructor and inventor of the one-motion breech opening mechanism. Nearly half of the book is devoted to the military products of Schneider; armour plates, artillery, naval guns, quick-firing guns , mortars, howitzers, naval turrets etc. Other articles deal with their steel plants, ship-building, marine engines, locomotives, civil engineering etc. The last chapter (LI) deals with the Schneider pavilion at the Paris 1900 World Exhibition. (Due to larger/size weight of this book, additional shipping charges may apply depending on customer location.).

Bound with item [2] in later full vellum binding (pastiche binding), leather title label on spine, with engraved armorial ex-libris (engraved by Martin Tyroff in Nürnberg) of Ernest-Friderich III of Saxony -Hildburghausen. [2] Coloniae Brandenburgicae (Berlin Cölln), Ulrich Liebpert, 1700, (20)nn pp (title with vignet, dedication, preface, index) + 103 pp + (18)nn pp (coin index) + 12 pp (Beger's notes) + 68 engraved plates of coins (20 to 24 coins each plate). Nice and interesting collection of two books by Lorentz Beger with great numismatic interest. The first work is famous because it mentions for the first time the famous Roman sarcophagus of the Pamphili collection. The second work is very rare. Beger rewrites here a study by Jacob de Bie (1581-1640) , numismatic collector and print-maker of the Southern Netherlands , first published in 1615, then 1627, with commentary by Albert Rubens (son of the painter). The study describes the collection of the golden roman coins of Charles de Croij (1560 - 1612) He was a famous collector ; also known for his collection of the ''Albums de Croy'' which offer a rich iconography of his estates in the Netherlands. Lorentz Beger (1653-1705) was librarian to the Elector of Brandenburg Friedrich III and also responsible for his art collections. The second work is dedicated by Beger to Elector Friedrich III 2 years before he became Friedrich Ist, king of Prussia.

Bound in contemporary (?) full calf, raised gilt spine with gilt, double gilt fillets on both covers. Lower end of spine with some damage, binding with some signs of use but technically sound. Interior with extensive annotations in ink, in small handwriting. Still a fine copy. [Bound with] Treterus' In Quinti Horatii Flacci.poemata omnia , rerum ac verborum locupletissimus index. [II] Antverpiae, Ex officina Christophori Plantini, Architypographi Regij , 1576, in-8, 162 x 105 mm, 230 pp + (2)nn pp (errata ). Complete, collation identical with Voet n°2343. This is the third edition of Horatius' works published by Plantin. In order to match the text with the index prepared by the Polish priest Thomas Treterus, residing in Rome with Stanilas Hosius, Plantin had to copy exactly the Lyons edition by S. Gryphius of 1545. Which is what he did. After some difficulties and delays Plantin could finish Treterus' index on the 15th of March 1576 (as indicated in the colophon). This explains the difference of the year on the titlepages. (See Voet 1382 and 2343 with, as ever, his clear and detailed explanation on the genesis of this Horatius' edition and the separate index.).
