Billy WilderÕs legendary status in Hollywood as a director, screenwriter, and producer includes such classic films as Ninotchka, Sunset Boulevard, Double Indemnity, The Lost Weekend, Stalag 17, Some Like it Hot, The Seven Year Itch, The Apartment, and The Fortune Cookie. The Newtons and the Wilders were close friends. Besides being one of the greatest film directors, Wilder was one of the great collectors of modern art. In 1989, Wilder decided to auction a portion of his art collection which brought 32.6 million dollars.
