Softcover. Zustand: Good. First Edition. THE CLASSIC BOOK THAT HAS INSPIRED MILLIONSA penetrating examination of how we live and how to live betterFew books transform a generation and then establish themselves as touchstones for the generations that follow. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is one such book. This modern epic of a mans search for meaning became an instant bestseller on publication in 1974, acclaimed as one of the most exciting books in the history of American letters. It continues to inspire millions.A narration of a summer motorcycle trip undertaken by a father and his son, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance becomes a personal and philosophical odyssey into fundamental questions on how to live. The narrator's relationship with his son leads to a powerful self-reckoning; the craft of motorcycle maintenance leads to an austerely beautiful process for reconciling science, religion, and humanism. Resonant with the confusions of existence, this classic is a touching and transcendent book of life. This new edition contains an interview with Pirsig and letters and documents detailing how this extraordinary book came to be.

First edition, first printing. Published by The Bodley Head in London, 1974. This is a near fine copy. The dust wrapper, greatly illustrated by John Sewell, has some slight curling at the top edge, some corner wear and some light surface scratching. There is an area of separation to both spine tips. It has not been price clipped, rightly showing the original £2.95 net price. The boards are free from notable chips and marks, proudly bound in the publisher's brown buckram. The internals are immaculate, as are the text blocks. Overall, this is a near fine copy and free from inscriptions. Rare. It is a work of fictionalized autobiography and is the first of Pirsig's texts in which he explores his concept of Quality.

Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. First Edition. First edition, first printing. Presentation copy signed by Robert M. Pirsig on the front free endpaper, inscribed to William Kemsley, founder of and reviewer for Backpacker magazine: "Dear William Kemsley[,] Many thanks for your insightful reading of this book. You've seen its main point-- an effort toward a new mythos-- which other reviewers have curiously overlooked. Robert M Pirsig June 21. 1974." 412 pp. Bound in publisher's original black paper boards over black spine cloth lettered in silver. A Fine copy, unread and bright internally, with textblock slightly sunken, as is typical, in an excellent example of the jacket with a tiny pucker along the front gutter, else Fine. A superior copy of a fragile, cheaply-produced book almost always encountered looking like it was run over by a leaky motorcycle. A classic of modern spirituality, with a very nice inscription.
