Gaio Plinio Cecilio Secondo (61-113?), scrittore di origini comasche fu il nipote di Plinio il Vecchio. Cresciuto dottrinalmente nella scuola di Quintiliano fu grande amico di Tacito, si dedicò alla storia e soprattutto alla carriera politica, prima come senatore e poi come governatore. Quest'opera raccoglie 77 brevi ritratti di uomini illustri dell'epoca romana. Seconda edizione del volgarizzamento curato dal fiorentino Paolo del Rosso (1505-1569) ed edito da Giolito appena due anni prima. Opera di incerto autore, attribuita a S. Tipografo originario di Trino, attivo a Venezia. Non se ne conosce il cognome; non ci sono prove che fosse parente dei Giolito. Fu uno dei tipografi più attivi di Venezia alla metà del XVI s. e stampò per un gran numero di editori, le cui marche gli sono state spesso attribuite; nel primo periodo della sua attività ebbe problemi con la giustizia per stampa di testi eterodossi. Fu amico di Nestorio, pur non condividendo gli esiti delle sue dottrine, e avversario di Cirillo di Alessandria. Fu il più celebre vescovo di Cirro. Le sue numerose opere spaziano in quasi tutti i campi sapienziali dell'epoca e dimostrano la grande preparazione di Teodoreto, ottimo conoscitore della letteratura classica e di varie lingue (il suo greco fu, successivamente, lodato anche da Fozio). Molte opere, però, sono andate perdute in seguito alla condanna postuma operata dal secondo concilio di Costantinopoli. Di queste siamo a conoscenza solo grazie ad alcuni riferimenti presenti sia in altre opere di Teodoreto, sia in opere di altri scrittori. He was a friend of Nestorius, although he did not share the results of his doctrines, and an adversary of Cyril of Alexandria. He was the most famous bishop of Cyrrhus.
