Truman sent American ground forces into the Republic of South Korea five days after the surprise attack by the In Min Gun, the North Korean Peoples' Army, on Sunday, June 25, 1950, the United States was entering its third major war in the twentieth century and the first major conflict of the Cold War. The nearly 150~yea rold U.S. Military Academy, an institution proud of its graduates, their reputations for integrity, strength of character, leadership, and their contributions to America's history, once more was sending large numbers of its young graduates to do their duty ~ fighting in Korea. The class of 1950 received its bloody baptism of fire that summer, as did the classes of 1945~49. Though life and education at the Academy appeared wartime normal in every respect and Coach Earl "Red" Blaik's football teams were continuing their run to glory on America's collegiate gridirons, something was deeply wrong at West Point. Not until the spring and summer of 1951 did the Military Academy and the nation learn of the "something" tearing at the foundations of one of America's most respected institutions of higher learning. Opening with the first, complete, never~published account of the discovery, undercover and formal investigations into organized cheating in academics, the prelude to resignations by eighty~three cadets in the period August~December 1951, A Return to Glory tells of the heretofore unrevealed after~effects of an unprecedented incident that became a national scandal. There follows a compelling true story of the Academy, cadets at West Point, and graduates and citizen soldiers in war, struggling to live the Academy's deliberately high standards and ideals expressed in its motto, Duty, Honor; Country.
