Hardbound. Jacket Design Tony Greco (illustrator). Third Edition 1st Edtion. These two books are being sold together because they both deal with the history of the Science Fiction genre: The first, In Search of Wonder with an introduction by Anthony Boucher is a unique critical study of science fiction, Mr. Knight works on the principle that science fiction is a form of literature which needs no apologies and no special dispensations: it can and should be judged by the same high standards that apply to all literature. This expanded Third Edition is 150,000 words, up from 120,000 in the 1967 Second Edition, and double the length of the 1956 First Edition. This new edition adds a chapter of autobiography, articles on writing and teaching science fiction, and other fascinating essays. The second book:The Futurian Society is the story of the Great Science Fiction Family of the 1930's founded in 1938 by thirteen science fiction fans; it never numbered more than twenty, including wives, girl friends and hangers-on; yet out of this small group came seven of the most famous names in science fiction; Isaac Asimov, James Blish, Damon Knight, Cyril Kornbluth, Judith Merril, Frederik Pohl and Donald A. Wollheim. Brilliant, eccentric and poor, the Futurians invented their own subculture, with its communal dwellings, its folklore, songs and games, even its own mock religion. Both of these books are must haves' for fans and makers of modern Science Fiction. Both books are good to very good condition, some stained edges due to shelf sitting for many years. Bindings are square and the boards are parallel, no other damage. Both DJ are very good to excellent.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good-. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. This book is in Near Fine condition and has a Very Good- dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket has several small edge tears, and bumping, with extra wear to the top and bottom spine ends. The entire dust jacket has lightish toning / browning, especially the spine. "Originally titled Astounding Stories of Super-Science, the first issue was dated January 1930, published by William Clayton, and edited by Harry Bates. Clayton went bankrupt in 1933 and the magazine was sold to Street & Smith. The new editor was F. Orlin Tremaine, who soon made Astounding the leading magazine in the nascent pulp science fiction field, publishing well-regarded stories such as Jack Williamson's Legion of Space and John W. Campbell's "Twilight". At the end of 1937, Campbell took over editorial duties under Tremaine's supervision, and the following year Tremaine was let go, giving Campbell more independence. Over the next few years Campbell published many stories that became classics in the field, including Isaac Asimov's Foundation series, A. E. Van Vogt's Slan, and several novels and stories by Robert A. Heinlein. The period beginning with Campbell's editorship is often referred to as the Golden Age of Science Fiction. " (from Wikipedia).

Hardbound book. Jacket by Jon Stopa (illustrator). 1st Edition. "The Issue at Hand," is Blish's first collection of his science fiction criticism. For many years, hiding under a cloak of anonymity, the most penetrating critic of the field of magazine science fiction was known as "William Atheling, Jr." It soon became a challenge to guess his real identity. No easy game, for Atheling's dissection spared no one, not even his other ego, the noted science-fiction writer James Blish, not to mention Heinlein, Van Vogt, and a plethora of Hugo awardees. This volume concentrates on science-fiction in the SF magazines from 1952 to 1963. Atheling's skillful rapier skewers literary malefactors of many kinds, including some well-known authors whose great popularity is all the more puzzling because there seems to be so little reason for it. This is not only a textbook for students of writing. It is a vastly entertaining collection in its own right, affording many hours of pleasant and informative reading and re-reading, urging the reader ahead with the wry comments, unexpected humor, and undeviating attention to standards that were the hallmarks of William Atheling, Jr. Excellent condition, no bumps or dings with minimal handling marks, boards and binding flat and square. Pages are tanning from age but not brittle or damaged. All and all, excellent condition to add to a collection of literary criticism of Science Fiction in the plups. DJ in excellent condition, exception is yellowing at binding, covered by Highsmith Mylar sleeve. Has brail labels afixed to back cover.
