It illustrates what a group of young men would have seen on their Whitsuntide holiday in 1931 had the weather been in their favour. In 1991, shortly after the death of Alfred Wainwright, W. E. Maudsley, the sole surviving member of that group, made available the details of their holiday; unknown to anyone, he had kept them for sixty years. On six foolscap sheets, it outlined a route over the high fells of Lakeland. The Whitsuntide Tour was the brainchild of Alfred Wainwright, who, after his first visit to the Lakes the year before, had to see more. Its aim was to see every valley, mountain, and lake, even though they may not all be visited. With his three companions, Jim Sharples, Harry Driver, and Eric Maudsley, they set out on 23 May 1931. The walk, a test of man's endurance against nature, ended six days later. Unfortunately, A. W. did not keep notes and does not mention the walk in either of his biographies, so we can only assume how it must have been for the young adventurers. Although it failed to achieve its objective, the Whitsuntide Tour was to sow the seeds that culminated in the guide books we know so well. It was the beginning of a Love Story. It was widely regarded as a precautionary measure, but ninety minutes later, an immense tidal wave was roaring down the valley towards them. Guy Gibson, who led 'X' Squadron of 19 specially adapted Lancasters equipped with Barnes Wallis's 'bouncing bomb', knew that the odds were stacked against him and his men. But they would not let him down. Some, like Squadron Leader Young whose bomb breached the dam, would return home as heroes. Others, like Pilot Officer Byers and his crew, would not, shot down just after crossing the North Sea while they were still miles away from their targets. The institute was initially organised by ex-Suffragists, who felt that now women had the vote, they deserved an education that would give them the confidence they needed to make their presence felt in the new world opening up to them. Initially conceived as a way of improving the food supply for the nation during the First World War, the Women's Institute again proved its worth when it responded to the national crisis at the outbreak of the Second World War, tackling food shortages and finding billets for evacuee children. New challenges came in the 1960s and 1970s with the rise of the feminist movement. Membership of the WI declined and a search began for ways to update the Institute's image and keep it relevant to younger women. Then, out of the blue, came the Calendar Girls. The old 'jam and Jerusalem' image of the WI was swept away by the energy, imagination and sheer courage of the women of Rylstone WI, leading to a renewed interest in and respect for the organisation. These first Championships culminated in a debate on how to standardise the rules of the sport as it evolved. John Moyer Heathcote was one of those who devised the original rules of lawn tennis, and he is also credited with inventing the cloth covering for the tennis ball. The war in Africa dominated the headlines, with huge swathes of the North African desert changing hands continually. At sea, Germany's Bismarck sank HMS Hood, but was soon sunk herself, while Fortress Britain endured night after night of heavy Blitz and the horrors of the Luftwaffe's incendiary bombs. The first turning point of the war came in June, with Operation Barbarossa - Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union - opening up a second front in the east. The next would not come till December, when the war moved from beyond its European and African front lines to become a truly global conflict. Japan awoke the sleeping giant that was the USA with a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Simultaneous attacks on Hong Kong, Malaya, the Philippines and Indonesia saw huge parts of Asia firmly under Japanese control by the end of the year. Situated a few miles to the south of Manchester City Centre, the Four Heatons have always been popular residential suburbs for families wishing to swap the industrial clamour of the inner city for fresh air and fine views across open spaces to the Pennines and the Cheshire Plain. The coming of the railways in the late nineteenth century provided easy access to the area for commuters travelling between Manchester and Stockport, resulting in the building of the imposing period houses, churches, tree-lined roads and parks that are still a feature of the area today. Each of the Four Heatons has its unique story to tell. Heaton Chapel's links to St Thomas' Church, Heaton Mersey's journey from rural hamlet to Victorian village, Heaton Moor's development as the natural centre to the area and Heaton Norris' industrial heritage, can all be traced through the pictures and stories of these postcards. Between 1901 and 1910 the Heatons were involved in the communications revolution which swept across Britain and were unequalled until the digital age of the 21st century. From at least as early as the eighteenth century it became a tradition that, following operations involving the Royal Navy, the commanding admiral would report to the Admiralty in the form of an official despatch. Following the French wars of 1792-1815 the despatches were published and that set a precedent. After the Second World War the relevant despatches for 1939-45 were published (from 1947 onwards) as supplements to the London Gazette. The despatches reproduced here, introduced and annotated by Professor Bennett, cover events with a huge bearing on the outcome of the war, such as the convoys in the Mediterranean and to Russia, major amphibious operations and raids such as Dieppe, alongside some of the minor operations involving the Royal Navy and, of course, D-Day. These important documents are published here in an accessible form. We are fortunate that they were written in a way designed to be understood by the public at the time. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Jane was Henry VIII's third Queen, and she was described by him as 'his first true wife', both his first two marriages having been annulled. She was twenty-seven when he married her, and came of a solid gentry family with good court connections. She had served both Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn as a Lady of the Privy Chamber, and her failure to find a suitable marriage is something of a mystery. He was forty-four and desperate for the male heir who had so far eluded him, but which Jane's placid disposition and sexual availability seemed to promise. She was no great beauty, but came of a good breeding stock, and therein lay his hope. They married at the end of May 1536, and she became pregnant at about the end of the year, a condition which advanced normally, but which caused the King acute anxiety as the summer of 1537 advanced. Then in October 1537 Jane performed the great miracle, and bore Henry a son, who lived and flourished. Tragically she died of puerperal fever a few days later, leaving the court in mourning and the king devastated. Her obsequies were elaborate and prolonged, and Henry stayed in mourning for many weeks. The king's son, Prince Edward was carefully nurtured, and probably did not miss the mother he had never known. When the time came, his education was overseen by Henry's sixth Queen, Catherine Parr, and he seems not to have had much of the Seymour in his make up. He was very much his father's boy.
