It was established to honor Andrew Johnson, 17th President of the United States, who became president after Abraham Lincoln's death. The site includes two of Johnson's homes, his tailor shop, and his grave site within the Andrew Johnson National Cemetery.The cemetery also includes the interments of Johnson's wife, Eliza McCardle Johnson, and son Brigadier General Robert Johnson. David T. Patterson, a United States Senator from Tennessee, and his son Andrew J. Patterson, who was instrumental in securing historic designation for the Greeneville properties associated with Andrew Johnson, were among others buried in the cemetery. The site was designated a U.S. National Monument in 1935 and redesignated a National Historic Site on December 11, 1963. The California painter and photographer Andrew Putnam Hill (1853-1922) successfully led an effort to preserve a large Redwood forest in Big Basin, California as a public park. The effort helped launch the California State Park System in the early 20th century. Please note the tiny figure about to walk into the beam of light, just left of center. Very good condition, printed slightly off kilter, and with some uneven areas of the mostly matte surface, with evidence of condensation along the left side. Viewed head-on it does not affect the image. With the photographer's blind stamp at foot, beneath the number 108 at left. Mr. Hill's ink stamp appears on the reverse side.…

Addressed on reverse to 'Most Noble / Marchioness Cornwallis / 12 Park Crescent'. The printed statement beside this has been completed in manuscript to show that the Marchioness has twelve votes. The other side of the leaf is headed: 'Polling Paper / For the Electio of Three Contributary Wards, / On Wednesday, December 14th, 1842, / Between the hours of Two and Four o'Clock, / At the House of the Adult Orphan Institution, / St. Andrew's Place, Regent's Park.' Brief notes and a set of instructions follow. The five candidates are Miss Charlotte Jane Richmond, Miss Amelia McEw[en], Miss Amelia Pym, Miss Isabella Anne Quin and Miss Mary Ann Jones. The Marchioness has written the number '12' beside each of candidates 2 to 4, and signs 'L. Cornwallis', dating her vote to 25 November 1842.…
