Clean, untanned interior with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps. Firm secure binding, spine shows cosmetic scuffing but remains free of creasing. We shall be led from the earth on which we live into the wide physical spaces of the cosmos, uplifted into the spiritual spheres from which the physical universe ha derived its origin. They will show that the fundamental aim of knowledge and wisdom is to solve the greatest of all riddles, the riddle of man." With these words Rudolf Steiner begins this series of ten anthroposophical lectures which aim to place human existence within the wisdom-filled spiritual relationships of cosmic and earthly beings. The religious traditions of all ancient peoples speak of hosts of spiritual beings, whether called angels, devas, dyanchohans, or gods. In this book the ninefold hierarchy of beings, spheres, and powers, known in the old European mystery centers and later introduced into Christianity in the writings of Dionysius the Areopagite, is cast into Western terminology. Steiner's spiritual research throws light on the activities of spiritual and elemental beings in the kingdoms of nature, in the origin and workings of the planetary and earthly spheres, and within the human being. His conclusion presents what is purposeful in this cosmic order, and he explains the task allotted to humanity in the continuous evolution of this hierarchical world. "How should man be integrated into the ranks of the hierarchies? After the arch-angels and angels, the arch-messengers and messengers, we shall have to place among the hierarchical ranks the Spirit of Freedom or the Spirit of Love. Counting from above downward, this is the tenth hierarchy, which, though still in a process of development, nevertheless belongs to the divine hierarchies." During the last two decades of the 19th century the Austrian-born Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925) became a respected and well-published scientific, literary, and philosophical scholar, particularly known for his work on Goethe's scientific writings. After the turn of the century he began to develop his earlier philosophical principles into an approach to methodical research of psychological and spiritual phenomena. In 1913 he founded the anthroposophical movement, under the aegis of which he continued research out of his trained seership for the renewal of twentieth century society. Steiner's multi-faceted genius has led to radically new, holistic approaches in medicine, science, education (Waldorf schools), special education, philosophy, religion, economics, history, agriculture (Bio-Dynamic method), architecture, drama, the new art of eurythmy, and other fields.

Excerpt: "On the one hand, then, this mystical attitude IS a good preparation and guide for spiritual science; on the other we have as a preparation for that medieval absorption the activity of soul with which we are to deal at greater length, and which we may call, in the true sense, prayer. Just as the mystic is enabled to attain his absorption because he has, even though unconsciously, trained his soul to have the right temper for such mysticism, so if we want to work our way to this absorption, to tread a path which shall end there, we shall find a preparation in true prayer." This is not a history in the usual sense as this volume's real concern are not concepts, systems, and problems of philosophy. though they do arise as symptoms of the riddles that Steiner examines. Steiner inspects the process in which philosophical thinking appears in Western Civiization. What is unique here is philosophy as a manifestation of the development of human consciousness; not merely the concepts which are finely observed, but the thinking or consciousness behind them in which they appear. An examination of the milieu that generated the varying philosophical movements throughout Western history. Printed in the United States of America. 479 pages. Insured post.
