The books are not the same size, volume I is 1/4 inch shorter than volume II, volume 2 has nice gilt top pages and volume I does not, usual library markings, pages browning due to age, some bumped corners and edge wear, otherwise in good condition with tight bindings, some nice black and white photographs and a total of 1080 pages. Author Remarque creates and introduces the reader to a group of characters who symbolize and interpret our common humnaity. The setting is Paris, full of teeming life yet always on the brink of catastrophe, of a culture nearing its inevitable end. Here the reader meets surgeons, singers & actresses, business people, American expatriates, prostitutes, shopkeepers, cab drivers, refugees, ladies of society and of the night, down on their heels philosophers. Here author Remarque again establishes himself as a great writer and a great humanitarian, as he did in his first book "All Quiet On The Western Front". Former owner's name on ffep; interior pgs. are bright & clean; blue boards are gilt lettered with minimum shelf wear. Illustrated d.j. has a few chips around edge but is now protected in mylar jacket. Overall cond. is very good. Size: 5 1/2" x 8".
