This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Few places in the United States can compare to the natural beauty and grace of Western North Carolina, a combination of picturesque mountain ranges, rolling foothills, and lush valleys. At the turn of the century, the visual splendor of the Appalachians and clean mountain air drew thousands upon thousands of visitors, including a large number of photographers, to the region's many health resorts, hotels, hiking trails, and small towns. Like explorers of old, these photographers went out into the North Carolina wilderness carrying their bulky photographic contraptions and glass-plate negatives in hopes of sharing its spectacular scenes with the rest of the nation. Using cameras equipped with twin lenses mounted about 2.5 inches apart, which created almost identical images, these photographers created stereoscopic views, or stereo views--double images placed on a rigid card--which were then viewed through a hand-held stereoscope and resulted in the person experiencing a three-dimensional effect. In Western North Carolina: A Visual Journey Through Stereo Views and Photographs, you will see these professional photographers' hard work, a wonderful collection of images capturing the unspoiled beauty of the region, such as pictures of waterfalls, rivers, forests, and mountain ranges; views of local people at work and at play; snapshots of early railroad construction; and panoramas of the growing mountain communities, such as Bakersville, Hot Springs, Lenoir, Old Fort, Hendersonville, and Asheville. 98 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -A center of New South industry and expansion, Nashville has enjoyed a long and unusual history, from its time as a budding pioneer community to its development as the Volunteer State's capital city. The prolific work of two visionary nineteenth-century photographers, a father and his adopted son, has truly captured a Nashville of bygone times, when the city was the home of presidents, a site for both Confederate and Union occupation, and a place of flourishing architectural tastes and cultures. Nashville: From the Collection of Carl and Otto Giers chronicles the work and talent of Carl and Otto Giers, two photographers who enjoyed a long-lasting love affair with their hometown. Both were interested in recording their personal Nashville, which was constantly changing due to the pressures of their times: war, Reconstruction, urban development, and many community 'improvements,' which tore down historic buildings for new businesses and buildings. This volume, with over 200 striking images, showcases their combined work in preserving Nashville's unique heritage from 1855 to the turn of the century. A fascinating visual history, Nashville: From the Collection of Carl and Otto Giers takes you on an incredible tour through the city's many historic landmarks, such as The Hermitage, Belle Meade mansion, Belmont plantation, and the Tennessee Centennial Exposition, and allows you to experience first-hand the street scenes, the different fashions of the nineteenth century, and the cityscapes and landscapes from Union occupation to the late 1890s. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This fascinating photographic history tells the story of Hudson, a peaceful New England town with a rich history. The first resident, John Barnes, came to the area in 1698 and built a gristmill by a waterfall on the Assabet River. Later, a sawmill was built, followed by several small industries that huddled around the mill. By 1850, railroads came to the area, now called Feltonville, as did many factories. In 1886, the area became the Town of Hudson, and it continued to grow with modern factories, a more diversified industry, banks, schools, and a wonderful new town hall. The people of Hudson have always had an exemplary pride and courage in times of struggle. During the Civil War, several local homes were stations in the Underground Railroad, and many Hudson men took up arms to defend abolition. In 1894 disaster struck when a fire grew into an inferno and destroyed more than 40 buildings in the heart of the town. The same citizen zeal and courage that originally built the town built a new town to rise in place of the ashes. 130 pp. Englisch.

Significant images that have surfaced since the publication of the first volume provide a continuing pictorial saga of the town from its early development--when it was called Ocean Beach in the 1870s--through its growth as Belmar from 1889 to the 1960s. Previously unpublished photographs from the albums of families who visited Belmar provide a fascinating look at their summer homes including both the plush 'cottages' of the wealthy and the small bungalows of average families. Pictures of Belmar's famous lifeguards and their revered leader Howard Rowland, will bring back fond memories for those who frequented Belmar's beaches in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. Finally, the diverse year-round community of Belmar is not forgotten, as one chapter focuses on the shops and businesses around town, many of which have existed since the nineteenth century and continue today. 130 pp. Englisch.

This book, the first of a two-volume set, is a collection of many never-before-seen photographs that tell the story of this city's history. Springfield is a city of 'firsts.' The first successful gasoline-powered engine was built by the Duryea brothers here; the first U.S. musket was made at the Springfield Armory; and in 1891, resident Dr. James Naismith invented the game of basketball. The city's ties to the U.S. military are illustrated here, as are its many religious and ethnic communities. Within these pages, we can see images of a very different Springfield, including buildings much changed or long gone, and people remembered now in family albums. 130 pp. Englisch.

It was inevitable that the very rivers that served these native people would attract the first European settlers to the region, settlers who established Georgetown as a bustling port and key commercial center. In 1791, George Washington fixed the small community's enduring importance by including it in the plans for the new Federal City. Taking you down cobblestone streets, Historic Georgetown: A Walking Tour includes local sites associated with such historic figures as John F. and Jacqueline Kennedy, Alexander Graham Bell, Francis Scott Key, and Victorian novelist E.D.E.N. Here, in the first photographic history of the base, is the story of the men and women who came to Davisville and their legacy of superb accomplishments in the service of their country. Established on February 27, 1942, the base was designated to manufacture and ship overseas materials and equipment and to outfit and embark construction battalions and other naval units. Between 1942 and 1994, when the base was closed, the Seabees participated in every war involving the United States. With thousands of vessels plying the dangerous waters, the chance of a shipping disaster was always great. Hundreds of shipwrecks did indeed occur off the coast with startling losses. Through descriptive text and a variety of vintage images from private as well as museum collections, we get a rare glimpse into the lives of the dedicated government men and women. Author James Claflin combines an extensively researched text with this exquisite collection of previously unpublished images to tell the story of an area heavily dependent on its coastal commerce. The task of lighting and protecting the coasts was taken on by the U.S. Light-House Establishment and the U.S. Life-Saving Service, later merged to become the U.S. Coast Guard. Within these pages, see the Boon Island Lighthouse keeper, his family alongside, as he proudly poses in his uniform; life savers at Hunniwells Beach station as they pull through a blinding snowstorm to rescue the crew of a stranded schooner; and the way of life on an offshore lightship. Lighthouses and Life Saving along the Maine and New Hampshire Coast is a visual journey into our nation's maritime history. 130 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The Cherokee Nation, world-famous for its turbulent and colorful past, is home to the second-largest American Indian tribe in the United States. This fascinating visual history spans 14 counties of northeast Oklahoma, from the Arkansas River to the Kansas border, and features the capital, Tahlequah. The U.S. government's harsh treatment of the Cherokees culminating in the notorious 'Trail of Tears' is documented here. In Indian Territory, the Cherokees quickly established systems of democratic government, education, and communication. Many lived in the same manner as their white counterparts of the time, as wealthy plantation owners and ranchers. They were completely literate in their own written language, printing newspapers, magazines, and books. Devastation struck as the Civil War split the Cherokees into factions, dividing families and neighbors and destroying communities and homes. Again, the resilient Cherokees rebuilt their nation, enjoying growth and renewed prosperity until land allotment and statehood stripped away their self-governance. The progressive, accomplished character of the Cherokees is evidenced by the pictures and stories in this book. Here you will meet the leaders who helped rebuild the great Cherokee Nation, legendary figures like Sequoyah and Will Rogers, and the patriots and artisans who have kept the tribe's culture and tradition alive throughout history. 130 pp. Englisch.

Miller on Greensboro, North Carolina. Both men beginning their careers in the newspaper trade, Martin and Miller later embarked together on a private photography business, Martin's Studio, which endeavored to capture, besides studio portrait shots, public scenes of everyday life around town, various social functions, and the city's major events, such as local celebrations and parades, catastrophic fires, and famous visiting personalities. On display in the Greensboro Historical Museum beginning in January 2000, their extraordinary work serves as a fitting tribute to Greensboro's diverse history and guarantees that these two men will be remembered as the town's most remarkable visual historians of the twentieth century. Divided in the same manner as the exhibit, Martin's and Miller's Greensboro showcases every aspect of the city's life: images of street scenes, vanished sections of town and forgotten buildings, school life, local children, familiar faces, sporting events, businesses, and the community at play. This photographic collection, matched with informative captions, gives insight into the lives of these two photographers and provides an incredible visual history that will allow longtime residents to remember how Greensboro appeared in their own childhoods and allow today's generation a glimpse into the past of their grandparents' and parents' reminiscences and stories. 130 pp. Englisch.

Cheap land in the Virginia Military District drew settlers to the area in the 1790s. These early settlers came to the Chillicothe area with the idea of building a new state, and the State of Ohio constitution was signed in Chillicothe in 1803. Chillicothe was the capital of Ohio for two separate periods of time: 1803-1810 and 1812-1816. This visual history of Chillicothe contains over 220 historic images, including maps dating back to 1783 that illustrate land claims made by Virginia and other states. The images presented herein take the reader through the days of the Ohio and Erie Canal, the high time of the railroad, and the period when Camp Sherman, a World War I training camp, was located just north of town. Many of the buildings pictured survive and are preserved as part of Chillicothe's downtown business district. With the exception of the presence of automobiles, many of the street scenes look almost the same today as they did in the mid-1800s. Chillicothe survives today as a city with a population of over 22,000, in the midst of many historical attractions and a major, annual outdoor drama called Tecumseh. 130 pp. Englisch.

These two rivers encompass downtown Wilmington and have been the lifeblood of the city ever since they provided a pathway for its Swedish settlers. With their perpetual rise and fall of tide, ceaseless source of power, and never-ending supply of water, the rivers have seen the growth and decline of industry, nurture and neglect by government, and respect and rejection by residents. In 1979 and 1980, the authors visited every inch of both sides of the rivers, taking photographs, making notes, and doing historical and environmental research. Their efforts resulted in Project R.O.W. (Reclaim Our Waterfront), a detailed report funded by a grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In this book, Priscilla M. Thompson and Sally O'Byrne invite you to join them on a pictorial tour of Wilmington's waterfront. Through their collection of photographs, etchings, and lithographs showing waterfront recreation and industries, you will discover shipbuilding companies, steamboat excursions, parks, waterworks, bridge dedications, and all the landmarks and activities that are a part of the Wilmington waterfront's past. 130 pp. Englisch.

Twenty inhabitants lost their lives at that time; nineteen were hanged on Gallows Hill, and one elderly man, Giles Cory, by remaining mute as a personal protest to the proceedings of the court, was pressed to death under heavy weights. Once the prosecuting examinations began on March 1, 1692, local authorities were uncertain what course the following trials would take. Spectral evidence, in which the shape of a suspected witch tortured people, was a primary indication of guilt, as was the 'touch test,' in which a victim was released from the witch's power upon the laying on of hands. Not being able to correctly recite the Lord's Prayer was also damning. 130 pp. Englisch.

Located near the Savannah River in Anderson County and along South Carolina's Heritage Corridor, Iva is one such town, for it is a community forged by the determination and industriousness of a people whose values are based on a respect for family, church, and hard work. In Around Iva, South Carolina, a collection of over 200 postcards and photographs, many published here for the first time, you will tour one of the Upstate's most historic areas, from Iva and Starr to Antreville and smaller communities, such as Moffetsville, Due West, Lowndesville, Gregg Shoals, and Harper's Ferry. The entire spectrum of small-town life unfolds in these historic images, allowing you to experience life in the early part of the twentieth century on the area farms, in the one-room schoolhouses, in the area churches, from Baptist to Presbyterian, and along the unpaved streets that were crowded with early textile mills, general stores, banks, barbershops, and gin houses. This volume also introduces you to many of the area's more famous citizens, such as Iva Cook, the daughter of founder Dr. Augustus G. Cook; Sam Wakefield, a three-star general and military hero; Winston Metz, a prisoner of war in World War II; along with many images of early ministers, teachers, town leaders, and everyday citizens at work and at play. 130 pp. Englisch.

The Catawba River is no exception. Flowing down from the Piedmont region of North Carolina, this river has enjoyed a long and fascinating history with the people of the Carolinas, from early American Indian tribes to the first settlers of the colonies to today's generations living in York, Chester, and Lancaster Counties. In this volume of over 200 images, many seen here for the first time, you will take a visual journey through a special part of South Carolina, where the Catawba River functions as the life vein for the region and its people. Along the Catawba River is not only a celebration of this beautiful river, but serves as a fitting testimony to the hard work and determination of the people who have carved out successful lives along and near its bountiful banks. As you thumb through these pages, you will meet the region's everyday citizens, such as farmers, merchants, and community leaders; visit the early one-room schoolhouses that dotted the landscape; explore the home and farms of turn-of-the-century families; travel down unpaved streets and into early mills, general stores, and churches; and see the people at work and at play in the area's smaller communities, such as Van Wyck and Brattonsville, and in the larger cities of Rock Hill, Chester, and Lancaster. 130 pp. Englisch.

Truly an international city, Tampa attracted its residents from all over the world, and the city's natural deep-water port and proximity to the Panama Canal encouraged significant growth around the turn of the twentieth century. Visionary pioneers came together with Henry B. Plant's railroad, the construction of the Tampa Bay Hotel, and Tampa's five 'C's' (climate, cattle, citrus, cigars, and cheap labor) to build the city that became the 'Gem of Florida's Gulf Coast.' During this same period in Tampa's history, from the 1890s through the 1920s, the postcard was an extraordinarily popular means of communication. Postcard photographers traveled the nation snapping photographs of busy street scenes, documenting local landmarks, and assembling crowds of local children only too happy to pose for a picture. These images, printed as postcards and sold in general stores across the country, survive as telling reminders of an important era in American history. 130 pp. Englisch.

Albert Miller Lea surveyed the area in 1835 with the Dragoons of Fort Des Moines, he described sparkling lakes encircled by gently sloping woodlands, smooth prairies interspersed with shady groves and rich with the melody of feathered songsters--one of the most beautiful lands ever witnessed. 130 pp. Englisch.

Further development came as the Southern Pacific Railroad attempted to connect San Francisco with Bakersfield and the rails east. At the end of the track, Delano became a boom town overnight, a shipping center for sheep, cattle, and gold. This collection illustrates the Delano area's history from 1776 to 1930, touching on an 1891 train robbery by the famous outlaws, the Dalton brothers, introducing the reader to the Jack Rabbit King of Kern County, and exploring the kindling pioneer spirit of men and women struggling against the elements to build a life out of the wilderness surrounding Delano. Small neighboring settlements that were influential in Delano's growth and development are also featured here, including Famosa, McFarland, Pond, Alpaugh, Pixley, Terra Bella, Columbine, Richgrove, Ducor, Earlimart, Jasmine, Allensworth, Rag Gulch, California Hot Springs, and Woody. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Like many Sun Belt cities, Fort Lauderdale has experienced phenomenal growth over the past several decades. Once a wilderness home for the Seminole Indians and a few hardy pioneers, the small community grew up around Frank Stranahan's successful trading post, a convenient stop for hunters, fishermen, and sightseers preparing to head into the Everglades. But much more was in store for this rugged outback camp. Surveying Fort Lauderdale's fascinating history chronologically, this pictorial retrospective begins with the 1890s, a time when this part of the country was still part of America's frontier, isolated and wild. With the coming of the railroad and the twentieth century, an agricultural economy developed, and, soon, the Florida land boom would bring thousands of new settlers to the area. Fort Lauderdale's glistening beaches and comfortable climate earned the city an early reputation as a tourist town and, eventually, as a Spring Break mecca. 130 pp. Englisch.
