  • Verlag: Riverdale, New York: The Coalbin Press, 1933. Three preliminary leaves (title-page, half-title, contents) followed by twenty-six [hand-numbered ?] pages of poetry, one blank leaf, and colophon leaf ("Twenty five copies of this book printed from/ Caslon type on Van Gelder paper/ during the damp days of/ August 1933"). The anonymous author is Leslie Clarence Dunn, the geneticist who replaced T.H. Morgan at Columbia University in 1929. The presentation inscription in ink on the front inner cover reads: "For EWS/ with all due humility/ LCD;" EWS is almost surely Edmund Ware Sinnott, professor of botany at Barnard College in 1933 and one of Dunn's co-authors of the important work, Principles of Genetics (New York, 1925). Zustand: Fine. Two works in one vol. First work: viii, 144pp., 8vo. [Second work:] [4], 76; [6], 47, [1]; 32, 17-113, [1]pp., 8vo. With the work s original title-leaf "Dissertations on Theatrical Subjects, . by Mr. Cibber" dated 1756 bound after the first p. 76 and the final leaf containing an advertisement for Cibber s "Cephalic Snuff" with errata on the verso; a contemporary binder s blank leaf between the two works inscribed "Eliz. Debonnaire." Nicely bound together in mid-nineteenth-century half calf, spine gilt; a bookplate removed from the front pastedown. One of two editions of the first work; in this one p.16 begins: "ther s own son" and has pp. iv and 126-127 correctly numbered. After the huge success of Colley Cibber s Apology in 1740, his son Theophilus decided to climb on the bandwagon and began taking subscriptions for his own autobiography. Fielding and Ralph upset the apple cart by rushing out the present spoof, with their joint authorship recently demonstrated by Joel Schechter in Eighteenth-Century Brechtians: Theatrical Satire in the Age of Walpole (2016). The second work is Cibber s attempt at a comprehensive survey of English theatrical history, albeit vitiated by Cibber s animosity towards rival playwrights and theatre managers, especially David Garrick, who gets much criticism in the dissertations and in a separate "Epistle from Mr. Theophilus Cibber, to David Garrick, Esq." Cibber was both a rake and something of a buffoon. Pope, who of course made Cibber s father, Colley Cibber, King of the Dunces in the revised Dunciad, described Theophilus (in both earlier and later versions) as . . . that youth who takes the foremost place, And thrusts his person full into your face. With all thy Father s virtues blessed, be born! And a new Cibber shall the stage adorn. In the poem One Thousand Seven Hundred and Thirty Eight, Pope is even more explicit: . . . shall the Dignity of Vice be lost? Ye Gods! shall Cibber s Son, without rebuke Swear like a Lord? or Rich out-whore a Duke.…

  • Verlag: [ENGLISH: Two parts, bound together in recent half cloth, wrappers of first part bound at the beginning and end of the volume, bookplate. Fine. Both parts inscribed by the author: "Min kjaere ven Joh. Oehlenschläger fra JJAWorsaae" ("My dear friend Joh. Oehlenschläger from JJAWorsaae"). An important work in runology, establishing definitely that some geological formations in the south of Sweden were not runes.]

Sammanbundna i ett relativt nytt halvklotband, första delens omslag medbundna (först och sist i boken), exlibris. Gott skick. Båda delarna med likalydande dedikation: "Min kjaere ven Joh. Oehlenschläger fra JJAWorsaae". Kjøbenhavn, Forfattarens Forlag / Reitzel (i Commission), 1844-45. 4:o. 40; + 12 sidor + 5 utvikbara litograferede plancher.
