Faye Thomas and Virginia Perkins were roommates during the three years they spent in the Alachua County Hospital School of Nursing in Gainesville, Florida, graduating with the first class in 1948. The hospital was re-named Alachua General the following year. Dr. W. C. Thomas, Sr. was one of their teachers in the nursing school, as well as being one of the physicians on the medical staff. Faye and Virginia both a long, close relationship with him. They decided to write this book as a tribute to Dr. Thomas because of the enormous impact he had on the people of the community. The chapters are written from letters and from interviews with many who knew him, including member of his family, friends, patients, and co-workers. Both authors have enjoyed lengthy, productive careers as nurses, Faye mostly in the field of public health, and Virginia chiefly at Alachua General Hospital. They each moved away for a time to various cities in Florida, but "came home" to Gainesville, where they still live, just a few miles from each other. This is their first book.
