Hard Cover. Zustand: Near Fine. No Jacket. First Irish Edition. First Irish edition, following the London edition released the same year (Pine-Coffin 784.5). Rebound in quarter linen with new end sheets, modern owner bookplate on front endpaper, faintly foxed throughout. 1789 Hard Cover. vii, [1], 592 pp. 8vo. An 18th century travelogue based on the author's Grand Tour, which was originally published in two volumes in London in 1789. Piozzi was born Hester Lynch Salusbury and previously married to brewer Henry Thrale. She was a member of one of the wealthiest Welsh families of the time, though poor investments led to her father's bankruptcy, which compelled her to marry Thrale. Through the use of his fortune, she became a prominent patron of the arts, and known for her diaries and letters, which would later become an important scholarly source for those studying Samuel Johnson (she met Johnson after becoming a member of London society, the two traveled together, and Johnson wrote her two pieces of verse). She also published a volume about Johnson entitled Anecdotes of the Late Samuel Johnson in 1786.

Interior unmarked and in very good condition. Hester Lynch Thrale Piozzi (née Salusbury; 27 January 1741 or 16 January 1740 - 2 May 1821), a Welsh-born diarist, author and patron of the arts, is an important source on Samuel Johnson and 18th-century English life. She belonged to the prominent Salusbury family, Anglo-Welsh landowners, and married first a wealthy brewer, Henry Thrale, then a music teacher, Gabriel Mario Piozzi. Her Anecdotes of the late Samuel Johnson (1786) and her diary Thraliana, published posthumously in 1942, are the main works for which she is remembered. She also wrote a popular history book and a dictionary. She has been seen as a protofeminist. --- ".The only daughter of an impoverished Welsh family, she received an excellent education "although Education was a Word then unknown, as applied to Females" (Thraliana). At the age of sixteen she could read and write fluently in French, Italian and Spanish, and began studying Hebrew at the age of seventy, clearly portraying her strong, life-long interest in different cultures and languages." Bookplate / Exlibris of Richard Meade of Ballymartle attached to pastedown of Volume I. Excellent condition ! John Moore FRSE (1729 1802) was a Scottish physician and travel author. He also edited the works of Tobias Smollett. He was born on 10 October 1729 in Stirling, the son of Rev Charles Moore of Rowallan (d,1735) and his wife, Marion Anderson. The family moved to Glasgow in his youth and he was educated at Glasgow Grammar School. He was then apprenticed to Dr. John Gordon in Glasgow 1745 to 1747. After taking a medical degree at Glasgow, he served as a Surgeon's Mate with the army in Flanders during the Seven Years' War, then proceeded to London to continue his studies, and eventually to Paris, where became surgeon to the household of the British ambassador there. In 1751 he returned to Glasgow to rejoin Dr. John Gordon (also then practising with Dr. Thomas Hamilton). From 1769 to 1778 he accompanied the Duke of Hamilton (who was linked to Thomas) on a Grand Tour of Europe. On his return he took up residence in London. In 1792 he accompanied Lord Lauderdale to Paris, and witnessed some of the principal scenes of the Revolution. His Journal during a Residence in France (1793) is the careful record of an eye-witness, and is frequently referred to by Thomas Carlyle. In 1784 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His proposers were Andrew Dalzell, James Gregory, and John Robison. He died in Richmond in Surrey (now part of London) on 21 February 1802. He is buried in Stirling. His novel Zeluco (1789), a close analysis of the motives of a selfish profligate, produced a great impression at the time, and indirectly, through the poetry of Byron, has left an abiding mark on literature. Byron said that he intended Childe Harold to be a poetical Zeluco, and the most striking features of the portrait were undoubtedly taken from that character. Moore's other works have a less marked individuality, but his sketches of society and manners in France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and England (A View of Society and Manners in France, Switzerland and Germany, London, W. Strahan & T. Cadell, in the Strand, 1779, 2 vol.; A View of Society and Manners in Italy, with anecdotes related to some eminent characters, London, W. Strahan & T. Cadell, 1781, 2 vol.) were also very popular during his lifetime and furnish valuable materials for the social historian. "Mordaunt. Character Sketches of Life, Characters, and Manners, in Various Countries; including the Memoirs of A French Lady of Quality" was a powerfully written anti-French Revolution novel in three volumes in the form of 34 character sketches of famous politicians, royalty, generals, the wealthy, and the celebrity of the day. It also offers detailed eyewitness accounts of John Moore's observations as he travelled throughout Europe in the last years of the 18th century. There are gripping accounts of the heroic feats of a dashing British Officer included, which were actually accounts of John Moore's son, General Moore. (Wikipedia) Sprache: english.

Despite its faults it remains a fascinating copy and a terrific read. Captain Bligh's initial account on the most famous mutiny in maritime history, written shortly after returning to England in March 1790. From the book's 'Advertisement' page: "This part of the voyage is not first in the order of time, yet the circumstances are so distinct from that by which it was preceded, that it appears unnecessary to delay giving as much early information as possible concerning so extraordinary an event. The rest will be laid before the Public as soon as it can be got ready; and it is intented to publish it in such a manner, as, with the present Narrative, will make the account of the voyage complete." William Bligh's Narrative covers the period from April 4, 1789, to March 14, 1790; that is from the departure of the Bounty from Otaheite (Tahiti) to his own arrival back in Britain. The Mutiny on the Bounty took place April 28, three weeks after departure. Bligh published his narrativel several months after his return to London. Titled 'Narrative of the Mutiny on the Bounty', it was a bestseller for the publisher, George Nicol. Bligh published an expanded account, A Voyage to the South Sea, in 1792. Bligh's narrative called the voyage one of "uninterrupted prosperity," and made no mention of personal differences with the crew. Bligh's 1790 'Narrative' was consequently published (pirated) in Dublin, Philadelphia, Rotterdam, and Paris & Amsterdam the same year: Official First Edition: London (George Nicol). Pirated Editions (all 1790): Dublin (White, Byrne et al), Philadelphia (W. Spotswood), Paris & Amsterdam (Didot & Dufour), (French), Rotterdam (G.A. Arenberg): (Dutch). Note: Unlike the First (George Nicol, London) Edition; the Dublin Edition was published without charts & plans. Sprache: english.
