Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Buckminster Fuller (18951983) was an architect, engineer, geometrician, cartographer, philosopher, futurist, inventor of the famous geodesic dome, and one of the most brilliant thinkers of his time. For more than five decades, he set forth his comprehensive perspective on the world's problems in numerous essays, which offer an illuminating insight into the intellectual universe of this renaissance man. These texts remain surprisingly topical even today, decades after their initial publication. While Fuller wrote the works in the 1960's and 1970's, they could not be more timely: like desperately needed time-capsules of wisdom for the critical moment he foresaw, and in which we find ourselves. Long out of print, they are now being published again, together with commentary by Jaime Snyder, the grandson of Buckminster Fuller. Designed for a new generation of readers, Snyder prepared these editions with supplementary material providing background on the texts, factual updates, and interpretation of his visionary ideas. Initially published in 1969, and one of Fuller's most popular works, Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth is a brilliant synthesis of his world view. In this very accessible volume, Fuller investigates the great challenges facing humanity, and the principles for avoiding extinction and exercising our option to make it. How will humanity survive? How does automation influence individualization? How can we utilize our resources more effectively to realize our potential to end poverty in this generation? He questions the concept of specialization, calls for a design revolution of innovation, and offers advice on how to guide spaceship earth toward a sustainable future. And it Came to Pass Not to Stay brings together Buckminster Fuller's lyrical and philosophical best, including seven essays in a form he called his ventilated prose, and as always addressing the current global crisis and his predictions for the future. These essays, including How Little I Know, What I am Trying to Do, Soft Revolution, and Ethics, put the task of ushering in a new era of humanity in the context of always starting with the universe. In rare form, Fuller elegantly weaves the personal, the playful, the simple, and the profound. Utopia or Oblivion is a provocative blueprint for the future. This comprehensive volume is composed of essays derived from the lectures he gave all over the world during the 1960's. Fuller's thesis is that humanity for the first time in its history has the opportunity to create a world where the needs of 100% of humanity are met. This is Fuller in his prime, relaying his urgent message for earthians' critical moment and presenting pioneering solutions which reflect his commitment to the potential of innovative design to create technology that does more with less and thereby improves human lives . . . This is what man tends to call utopia. It's a fairly small word, but inadequate to describe the extraordinary new freedom of man in a new relationship to universe - the alternative of which is oblivion. Buckminster Fuller. 7 illustrations Initially published in 1969, and one of Fuller's most popular works, Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth is a brilliant synthesis of his world view. In this very accessible volume, Fuller investigates the great challenges facing humanity, and the principles for avoiding extinction and "exercising our option to make it." Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. 'Are We Human?' rethinks the philosophy of design in a multi-dimensional exploration from the very first tools and ornaments to the constant buzz of social media. The average day involves the experience of thousands of layers of design that reach to outside space but also reach deep into our bodies and brains. Even the planet itself has been completely encrusted by design as a geological layer. There is no longer an outside to the world of design. Design has become the world. Design is what makes the human. It is the very basis of social life. But design also engineers inequalities and new forms of neglect, such as lawlessness, poverty, and the climate at the same time as the human genome and the weather are being actively redesigned. We can no longer reassure ourselves with the idea of "good design." Design itself needs to be redesigned. AUTHOR: Beatriz Colomina is Professor of Architecture and Founding Director of the Program in Media and Modernity at Princeton University. She is the editor of "Sexuality and Space, " which was awarded the International Book Award by the American Institute of Architects. She is the coeditor of "Cold War Hot Houses: Inventing Postwar Culture from Cockpit to Playboy." Her most recent book is "Doble exposicion: Arquitectura a traves del arte." Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. In Brazil soccer is more than just a sport. It is hope for a better future, a distraction from everyday life, creator of identity and community. If there is no ball around, people kick fruit or cans; when there is no field, they make one. Soccer marks the soul of the Brazilian people, as well as the image of city and landscape. Any land that is somewhat level and not overgrown or built up becomes a soccer field. Even though there may be a lack of meeting places, parks, or village centers, there is always a campo de pelada. In this volume, two Brazilian photographers seek and find soccer in places where one might not expect to find it. Leonardo Finotti creates a kind of inventory, showing pictures from his series Campos Sagrados, for which he traveled through all of Brazil, to neighborhoods rich and poor, to industrial zones, urban peripheries, and to the country, to take photographs from an elevated standpoint of temporary and "real" soccer fields and their surroundings. In his photo series Brasilieiros Futebol Clube Ed Viggiani accompanies his fellow countrymen everywhere where soccer is played or a team followed. In this volume, two Brazilian photographers seek and find soccer in places where one might not expect to find it. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. The sequel to the authors' Are We Human?, this provocative book is an urgent manifesto for an alternative architectural philosophy. It treats bacteria as the real architects, construction workers, maintenance crews and inhabitants of buildings. Colomina and Wigley draw on the latest research into microbes to rethink the past and possible futures of the built environment. The book explores the intimate entanglements of the microbes within bodies and buildings over the last 10,000 years, culminating in the antibiotic philosophy of contemporary architecture. The diseases of our time are diseases of the built environment. The deadly combination of rapidly declining microbial diversity and rising antibiotic-resistant bacteria is as great a threat as climate change. Hostility to bacteria has to give way to new forms of hospitality from a more symbiotic architecture that learns from bacteria, embracing them and reconnecting with soil, plants and other species. Buildings based on fear of bacteria, which is to say fear of life itself, must give way to buildings learning from models of coexistence based on bacteria themselves. The main goal of the book is to rethink the very idea of shelter in terms of forms of inclusion rather than prophylactic forms of exclusion. AUTHORS: Beatriz Colomina is the Howard Crosby Butler Professor of the History of Architecture and the founding director of the Media and Modernity program at Princeton University. She has written extensively on questions of architecture, art, sexuality and media. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Compiling fashion advertisements from the past 100 years, En Vogue shows how fashion reveals the aspirations of its era. Advertising creates dream worlds, yet always simultaneously bears witness to its era. Both these tendencies are exemplified in fashion posters. Moving beyond the latest modish trends and beauty ideals, fashion posters reflect moral codes and social conditions. They are lifestyle propositions; they tell stories, seduce and shock. Playing with convention and provocation, bodies are sometimes lavishly veiled and disguised, sometimes sensually staged. At times consumers are only indirectly encouraged to shop. A button or a coat collar as a pars pro toto illustrate product quality in historical posters. A new, somewhat controversial approach to fashion advertising emerges in Benetton campaigns from the early 1990s. Overtly erotic ostentation contrasts with poetic allusions that are for example the hallmark of highly aesthetic Japanese fashion posters. Androgynous models and less normative images of men and women in the advertising industry mark the dawn of a new era that entails constantly balancing aspirations to individuality against a sense of collective belonging. En Vogue brings together fashion advertising spanning roughly 100 years and deploying myriad different PR strategies, in each case reflecting the cultures and periods in which it was created. AUTHOR: Elke Gaugele is an empirical cultural scientist and a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. She heads its "Fashion and Styles" program and the Austrian Center for Fashion Research. 110 images Fashion posters as contemporary witnesses and cultural history.100 years of fashion advertising as a mirror of its time.Fashion as a popular driver in the development of poster design. Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. A concise reader on European architecture's defining forces of the past 30 years. Following the pair of monographic "Sauerbruch Hutton Archives" (Archive, 2006; Archive 2, 2016) Lars Mueller Publishers presents a reader edited by the architects. Matthias Sauerbruch and Louisa Hutton have asked a diverse group of authors to reflect on the various conditions that have shaped the conception, production and dissemination of architecture in Europe over the course of the last three decades, and of the architecture that has resulted. The essays generally include observations on one or more of Sauerbruch Hutton's buildings, but these do not necessarily form the focus of the respective texts. The authors include critics who have written on the work of the practice in the past, architectural colleagues and writers whose opinions and observations are respected by the editors as well as a handful of people who either live or work in one of their buildings and so have experienced Sauerbruch Hutton's architecture firsthand. Further, a photographic essay by the Finnish artist Ola Kolehmainen will augment the twenty-five essays with works created between 1990 and 2020. Analogous to the written pieces, these are images in their own right and of their own subjects that have been triggered by the presence of one of Sauerbruch Hutton's buildings. AUTHORS: Louisa Hutton and Matthias Sauerbruch are founding partners of Sauerbruch Hutton, which is now based in Berlin and operates internationally. They are leading architects of their generation. Matthias Sauerbruch has taught at the AA, London, the TU Berlin, and the ABK Stuttgart as well as Harvard GSD and the University of Virginia. He has contributed to juries and conferences worldwide. Created in an atmosphere of sociopolitical ferment, these posters attest to a new aesthetic which appeared in Swiss graphic design of the 1980s. This aesthetic was influenced by the punk movement and the first experiments with the Macintosh. In constructive conflict with the stylistic rigor of the Swiss Style, young designers discovered innovative forms of visual expression which continue to enrich and enhance the world of graphic design today. This publication presents a heterogeneous collection of design attitudes that consciously break the rules. Included are works by Peter Bader, Polly Bertram and Daniel Volkart, Richard Feurer, Roli Fischbacher, Peter Frey, Ralph Schraivogel, Mihaly Varga, Cornel Windlin, Ruedi Wyss, and others. Vertreten sind u.a. Arbeiten von Peter BAder, Polly Bertram und Daniel Volkart, Richard Feurer, Roli Fischbacher, Peter Frey, Ralph Schraivogel, Mihaly Varga, Cornel Windlin und Ruedi Wyss. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. This book is the first monograph dedicated to the designer Rolf Muller who is known above all for his design of the visual identity of the Munich Olympic Games in 1972. Shortly after graduating from the famous Ulm School of Design, his former professor Otl Aicher entrusted him with this work, which set new standards in international design. In parallel, he established his design firm Buro Rolf Muller in Munich. On the basis of selected projects, the book attempts to retrace the mentality and methods of his design: For nearly four decades, the firm developed corporate identities, books, magazines and signage systems at the highest level. The firm's projects include the visual identity of the City of Leverkusen, forged over several decades, and the magazine HQ High Quality for the company Heidelberger Druckmaschinen, of which 39 issues were published. As a storyteller and system designer, Rolf Muller has left a mark on international design history with his work. His stance has had a decisive impact in shaping the way in which today's communications designers view their profession. 350 illustrations English/German Text Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Posters lend themselves perfectly to serial display. The mediation of the message and of the identity of the advertiser is supported by the effects of recognition. However in contemporary advertising campaigns this awareness is only rarely used in imaginative and intelligent ways. This publication illustrates the creative and effective advertising potential of posters in series. What is vital here is that a design concept has been followed. By doing so a formal or content-driven approach is sensitively varied, with the posters in the series only slightly differing from one another. At the same time the free interpretation of a basic concept can lead to a wide and highly inspirational spectrum of interpretations. What has been fundamental in the selection of campaigns for this book is the ability of the single poster to assert itself individually, while the fact that it belongs to a series is shown as being visually beneficial. ILLUSTRATIONS: 160 images - Series as a creative design concept - Published on the occasion of the exhibition in the Museum fur Gestaltung Zurich, November 10-27, 2011 Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. A century of posters protesting political and social evils and offering alternatives to tyranny This issue of Lars Mueller Publishers and the Museum fuer Gestaltung's Poster Collection series, presented in a new design, offers works from the last 100 years that demonstrate the tradition of the poster as a medium for protest and assert its validity and necessity in the present day. Peace appeals, reminders of human rights, calls to protect nature-since the 1920s, posters have proved an effective medium accompanying social and political struggles worldwide. While some posters are meant to shed light and are aimed at reflection, others appeal more strongly to the emotions of their audience. Dystopian images function as a provocation and warning, while utopian messages keep the belief in change alive. The designers of these posters, acting individually or collectively, are united by commitment and an emancipatory attitude as well as the conviction that resistance requires its own aesthetic to be effective. Artists and collectives include: Atelier Populaire, Asamblea de Artistas Revolucionarios de Oaxaca, ASARO, Anna Berkenbusch, Chaz Maviyane-Davies, David Tartakover, James Victore, Luba Lukova, Marlena Buczek Smith, Plazm, San Francisco Poster Brigade, Tomi Ungerer. Silas Munro is the author of Strikethrough: Typographic Messages of Protest at Letterform Archive (2023). He is founding faculty and chair emeritus for the MFA Program in Graphic Design at Vermont College of Fine Arts. SELLING POINTS: . Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. How poster design has served as an essential tool for Swiss political campaigns. The Swiss population is called upon to participate actively in political decision-making processes through regular campaigns. These campaigns are often concerned with issues that stir up heated emotions and lead to ideological battles. Campaign posters, which have influenced opinion-making since the beginning of the 20th century, bear testimony to direct democracy. This special form of political propaganda prominently associated with Switzerland is a sensitive indicator of socio-political moods and reflects both national mentalities and global tendencies. Ja! Nein! Yes! No! Swiss Posters for Democracy reveals the visual argumentation strategies and rhetorical approaches that have shaped the Swiss campaign poster from 1918 to the present. Cliched exaggerations, undifferentiated simplifications, a repertoire of drastic motifs and abridged slogans correspond to the laws of the medium, which is oriented towards a manipulative appeal to the masses. Appeals to a sense of unity focus primarily on emotionalisation rather than rational enlightenment. Subtly condensed messages or graphically innovative language are hardly to be found in campaign posters. And yet many renowned designers created works that have inscribed themselves in the collective visual memory of the Swiss population and have become icons of Swiss poster design. AUTHORS: Bettina Richter is an art historian, lecturer and author. Since 2006 she is curator of the Poster Collection of the Museum fur Gestaltung Zurich. Jakob Tanner is Professor Emeritus of Modern History at the University of Zurich and author of several books on the history of Switzerland in a European context. SELLING POINTS: . Switzerland's direct democracy promotes a rich culture of political posters . A cross-section of the campaign posters of a century reveals visual argumentation strategies and striking rhetoric 150 illustrations Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. La Ruta del Peregrino (the pilgrimage route) stretches a distance of 117 kilometers through the vast and imposing mountain range of Jalisco, Mexico. Approximately two million people participate each year in this religious phenomenon to meet the Virgin of Talpa as an act of devotion, faith, and gratitude. This book conveys the feeling of travelling on the pilgrim's route and encountering architectural monuments and their infrastructure, like shelters and viewpoints, embedded in the harsh landscape. Each introduced landmark, designed by renowned architects, sparks a dialogue about sustainability and austerity, landscape and architecture. Landscape of Faith is a documentation of the way architecture can increase the identity of a pilgrimage route and add layers of meaning that reach far beyond the religious. AUTHOR: Tatiana Bilbao (born1972) is a Mexican architect. She developed the architectural project along the Ruta del Peregrino and recipient of the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture. Iwan Baan (born 1975) is an architecture and documentary photographer. His photographs are published regularly in architectural magazines and he has worked for renowned offices. SELLING POINTS: . Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. A narrative companion to the buildings, structures and infrastructures that accumulate around borders. If cities were the 20th century's favourite playground, borders are the laboratory for globalised phenomena in the 21st century. Hotspots for migrants, barbed wire, green borders, checkpoints, go-slow for cross-border workers, crypto-currency mining farms, casinos, brothels, tax havens: all are to be found on the border. To date, borders lack a political project. In order to realize that project, the authors of Orae worked in situ with those living in border regions in Switzerland, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Lichtenstein, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Eritrea. They have started to imagine, describe and model the real territory and a potential project for it. "Orae" is a Latin word synonymous with borders. This guide invites readers on a journey inside orae, in a succession of fragmentary narratives from borders and the imaginations of those living in their vicinity. AUTHORS: Vanessa Lacaille and Mounir Ayoub are architects and the founders of the Laboratoire d'architecture. Fabrice Aaragno is a filmmaker. Pierre Szczepski is a sculptor. SELLING POINTS: . An interdisciplinary architecture and art project questions common ways of thinking about borders . Accompanying the exhibition in the Swiss Pavilion at the 17th Venice architecture biennial 200 illustrations Utopias for border regions. In the last two decades, Iranian poster design has achieved widespread admiration and distinction for its innovative explorations of type and typography, which have been notably accelerated by the implementation of new digital technologies. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. The architecture of the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 1930s was integral to shaping twentieth century modernism. Russian architect Konstantin Melnikov (18901974) was a key figure of this movement, with many of his realized projects becoming icons of modernism. Because he refused to conform to architectural standards after Stalin's cultural turn in 1932, his works were largely forgotten for several decades. He was rehabilitated and received public recognition for his imaginative constructions only a few years prior to his death in 1974. This publication presents models of Konstantin Melnikov's built and unbuilt works, created under the direction of Pavel Kuznetsov by the students of the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio. The models are accompanied by photographs, sketches and project descriptions expanding on Melnikov's work. An essay by Pavel Kuznetsov situates the architect in his historical context, shedding light on an under-appreciated figure of architectural history. 150 illustrations Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Otto Baumberger (1889-1961) was one of the first Swiss "poster designers". Baumberger was ahead of his time in recognizing fundamental aspects of consumer goods advertising and his designs helped to modernize the medium. His poster designs employed a reduction tending towards abstraction, in which graphic and textual elements underwent an increasingly potent synthesis. Baumberger's work embodies and exemplifies the history of Swiss poster art in the first half of the twentieth century, as the painterly artist poster gradually evolved toward graphically oriented corporate design. 120 illustrations Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Spiral. Zustand: new. Spiral. A delightful dymaxion cookbook homage to Buckminster Fuller, featuring John Cage's macrobiotic recipes, Margaret Mead's cucumber salad and more. Buckminster Fuller is globally known as a design scientist, architect, author, poet, engineer and a true visionary. On his 86th birthday he received the cookbook Synergetic Stew as a surprise present from his friends and admirers, who share recipes along with personal anecdotes and humorous recollections of Fuller (for example, a reminiscence about Bucky's love for tea in all its variations). Scattered throughout the book are enticing texts and poems from Fuller himself, including even a recipe for tomato ice cream. Constructed around 100 achievable recipes, this book is a glimpse into Fuller's life, as told by his peers. A few of the recipes are a joyful ode to Fuller's oeuvre, such as Shirley Sharkey's "GEODESICANDY," the "Macrobiotic Diet" by John Cage or Amy Edmondson's "Allspace-Filling Whole Wheat Bread." In addition to the facsimile, Jamie Snyder reflects upon often-overlooked facets of Bucky's character, as revealed through anecdotes of his relationship to food.
